06:17 PM ET 02.06 | Could the San Antonio Spurs be in talks with the Utah Jazz about working out a trade for Jazz center Al Jefferson? Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com has sources telling him that's the case. While he called the Spurs "frontrunners" to land Jefferson, it's still a matter of how such a deal could get done. The front offices are apparently very close relationship wise, but they're also very secretive. So what might they be talking about? Sheridan reports that a deal could send San Antonio big man Tiago Splitter, wing Stephen Jackson and either point guard Patty Mills or Nando de Colo to Utah in return for Jefferson.

No, this doesn't make a lot of sense, at least not for the Spurs. And I think Al is going to want a max contract in the off season. There are teams that will give it to him, but not the Spurs.

So you can trade 3 mediocre players for 1 really good one? Really? Jazz would be stupid to do this in my opinion. At least trade him to a team that will give you a player back that you would want on your team. It's not like Al Jefferson is a scrub. You should be able to get something valuable for him.

Agreed.
Imho a better return in value (not the best though) is Lee/Sullinger(pre-injury)/Barbosa.
I had this trade in my mind a long time ago before everyone got injured. The Celtics would have given up a lot of players to get him.

Utah would do this because they aren't planning on resigning Big Al. This way they get depth in the frontcourt at a reasonable rate in Splitter, and depth at the point in Patty. They will buyout Captain Jack and embrace the future in Favors and Kanter. The smartest thing would be to move Millsap too and take a step back next year for the best draft in the last decade.

They'd be dumb to get rid of Patty Mills, but That trade would make the Spurs front court scary good!

Yep, good points. The Jazz know they aren't re-signing AJ to the max, so trying to get as much value as they can for him. There are a few teams that will sign AJ for the max, but the Spurs aren't one, so not sure if this deal will go anywhere.
Good idea about Utah stepping back. If they can get some good picks for AJ and PM, they can build around Kanter as you said. Utah did well last year and this, considering the transition they went through. We'll see what happens.

Would make the Spurs very interesting. I don't care for them myself, but I love Al Jefferson.
