Gasol to miss at least 6 weeks

06:29 PM ET 02.06 | Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol was diagnosed with a partially-torn plantar fascia in his foot after hearing a "pop" in a game against the Brooklyn Nets Tuesday night. Sources told CBS Sports reporter Ken Berger that Gasol will miss at least six weeks, and he could miss more time depending on the recover needed and how he deals with the injury. Berger reports that Gasol could come back in six or eight weeks if he goes through rehab, or he could undergo surgery for a better likelihood of recovery. But surgery would mean a recovery period of 10 to 12 weeks. Gasol will seek a second opinion after undergoing an MRI in Boston on Wednesday, but whatever the case may be, the injury puts the Lakers in an ominous position. Gasol was playing well in place of Dwight Howard, who has a lingering shoulder injury, but the team is now without its two big men and with no understanding of when Howard can return.

ouch, this is going to hurt LAL's playoff hopes at a time when the time was really beginning to play well.

Gasol wasn't happy coming off the bench -- now he is out for 6 weeks.

Amare accepted his role coming off the bench -- and he is healthy.

I think these are related.

Losing Gasol will hurt the more than losing Howard.

But I think the Lakers will play better on defense with young legs out on the court, and Kobe-Nash can still carry the team with Meeks and Jamison hitting the outside shots.

How do you get an injury like this, what causes it? Did someone fell on his foot? Did he pull something when there was no action going on?

These injuries are so weird, sucks for Gasol. Lakers are almost .500, going to be exciting.

We should change our name to the Los Angeles Spirit of 76 (aka Yankee Doodle).

You know the painting of the injured soldiers where one carries the flag, one bangs the drum and the other the flute...
