Is Kirk Cousins on a fast track to an NFL starter?

06:48 PM ET 02.06 | With Robert Griffin III out with an ACL injury, Kirk Cousins is now the man in Washington which means if he already hadn't been given a brilliant opportunity to prove himself as a starter, this offseason could be when we see Cousins truly bloom into a hot commodity around the NFL. He's only started one game in his career, but even with just one and a half performances under his belt, teams already were giving him a look to see if he was worth a starting role. If one performance did that to NFL execs, imagine what an entire offseason of first team reps will do to Cousins' stock. Cousins replaced Robert Griffin III in a game against the Super Bowl champion Ravens this season in which he helped lead the Redskins back to win. He then started the next game against the Browns and turned in a great performance in that game too. While he knows his place on his team and isn't trying to usurp Griffin as the starter, he is going to try and be a vocal leader in the Rookie of the Year's absence.

In today's NFL a great insurance policy (backup QB) is always a good thing to have.

Not so.
Captain Kirk could have started immediately for a lot of teams, coming out of the draft.

If RGIII comes back from his second surgery on the same knee to the ACL and MCL, everything works right, he doesn't move the wrong way and no big nasty defensive players hit him too hard then no Kirk Cousins will hold the clipboard. BUT, I fear a whole lot of things have to go right for RGIII to play a whole season. He might just be too small and fragile for this level of football.

He's too small to carry the ball 10 times a game.
Thing is Shanny and Son got too cute with the offense, when they saw The R's running ability and speed. They forgot he won the Heismann with his arm. Not his legs.
He needs and deserves an offensive plan, minus the runs. He's not Cam Newton or Ben Roethlisburger, when it comes to taking those big hits.

Also, Russell Wilson is smaller... Drew Brees is smaller.

When asked to play he delivered, no reason to believe that he won't improve with time!

Well, they drafted Cousin's for a reason, we are going to find out why. I do not think RGIII plays next year.

Shanny & son aren't too swift. They were even having him run the ball after he was limping in the Seattle game. But that's just one part of the issue. 70% of ACL tears are not the result of contact. RG3 tore his at Baylor trying to avoid a collision in fact. Making a quick cut, stopping short, well there are lots of ways to blow that knee. Skins had better keep Cousins. Unless the Shenanigans want to put Rex Grossman out there again.
