08:04 AM ET 02.07 | More than 300 NFL Draft prospects are expected at this year's Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, which leads to talk about uninvited guests. [This year,] there were several surprising omissions from the recently released 2013 Combine invite list. ... 3. CB Branden Smith, Georgia. ... 2. RB Dennis Johnson, Arkansas. ... Johnson is a quick-footed runner with the balance and toughness needed for the position and leaves Arkansas as the school and SEC all-time leader in kickoff return yardage. 1. TE Michael Williams, Alabama. Although he plays stiff and will struggle to separate at the next level, Williams is a powerful and physical blocker with the size and strength to stick in the NFL as a No. 2 tight end.

Those are big schools, which will have Pro days. They'll get their chance to shine.

It's good to be snubbed, nobody paid attention to Tom Brady when he was there except one of BB Scouts!!!!! And Victor Cruz wasn't invited, so their in good company!!!!

Is the Combine becoming just another staged media event for the Lord High Commissioner? Will it eventually be a dog-and-pony show that will be attended by assistants rather than HCs and GMs?

Some of the others listed in the article aren't from big schools. With the combine getting so irrelevant for big name players from big schools, I would think the NFL would want to invite more players from small schools who might not get much of a chance at a Pro day.

Do the snubbed still have to take that wonderlick something test? Being snubbed could raise their place on those boards without that test score in there.

as far as I see it, it's a media driven event that shouldn't have any significant impact on where a player lands.

And remember before the media circus known as the Combine was established most scouting occured at Pro Days. There have been players that have been snubbed by the Combine and those players went on to produce better numbers than anyone at the Combine. I remember a Cal WR that ran the fastest 40 of any player entering the draft and he did it outside on a wet track after a rainstorm. The only thing that the Combine provides is a chance for coaches and scouts observe players outside their comfort zone, QB's have to throw the ball to WR's they are unfamiliar with. You go to a Pro Day workout and you basically have players throwing an catching balls from people they hand pick.

Don't they get treated like cattle enough - poked, prodded, weighed and measured. The combine is just a media event like a stock show for players. If you are good enough the NFL will find you.
