Pinkel back to blasting recruiting rankings

08:19 AM ET 02.07 | Missouri coach Gary Pinkel doesn't much care for where his program ranks in the recruiting race, and he said as much, again, Wednesday. [Pinkel] gave his annual "Rankings? What rankings" speech as he announced a class that some services rate as the worst in the conference. "We believe in our evaluation system," Pinkel said. "I say it every year and I'll say it again -- we never look at any stars on any players. It's never happened. We don't ever look at any rankings. It's never happened. We do what we do, and I think over the years it's proved it's worked in a very positive way for us in bringing players that can help us win a championship." That last part has been elusive and has become a more daunting pursuit in a new league.

And that showed last year when your team played some schools who did look at the stars, as 20-41, 10-31, 10-42, and 29-59 scores attest (Georgia, South Carolina, Bama, and Tx A&M, respectively).

Never should have move into the SEC.

Money talks to folks.

True.

Also the SEC model for television exposure beat the heck out of the Big 12 model at the time. Mizzou got little exposure in the St. Louis and KC TV markets when they were in the Big 12 thanks mainly to provisions set up to protect Fox's interests. It was a great move for Mizzou from a TV exposure standpoint.

Well, Coach Pinkel, no recruiting services are not the end all be all to recruiting from a coach perspective, but when every recruiting service says you got served, you probably got served.

Coach Saban does not use recruiting services as a tool to determine what recruits to go after, but he tends to have highly ranked classes. Why? Well, when he evaluates an Alvin Kamara as a very good talent, most everyone else has evaluated him that way, too.

You cannot tell me with a straight face that when you sign a guy that has an NR by his name in most services that you rated him as better than 4 star and 5 stars. Are you related to Mike Shula?

Alvin Kamara

With Bama overstocked with talented RBs, signing Alvin was a coup.

Maybe that's why Mizzou's football team spent this past year in the woodshed?

Yeah, but they felt good and smug about it.

They're big problem is the conference move, it left out their biggest recruiting area - Texas. They had a pipeline in DFW and central TX, before they started flirting with B1G and then moved to SEC.

They consistently had 20-30 ranked classes in the mid 2000's, with up to 20 Texas players on their rosters.

Coachspeak = "We're going to continue to do what doesn't work"...plain and simple

If he really believed any of this BS, he would be saying the same thing Bill Snyder says about the rankings. Nothing.

no rich football boosters in Missouri who can help to buy players????

Columbia MO has its share of big money (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Kroenke) but that is besides the point. What a lot of people are hearing around town is that he is on his way out which is good for Mizzou fans who were excited about the move to the SEC.

Agreed, but now days the news services make a big deal out of it thanks to all the overexposure from commercial ventures like Rivals, and from ESPN & SI's over-the-top glamorization of it all.

These are still 17-18 year old kids who are easily impressionable. The coaches have to find a way to congratulate the recruiting class, regardless of the BS ranking, then quickly move on to the developmental phase. I don't agree with Pinkel's choice of words and you are right Snyder takes a great approach.

Yeah, but he still uses an abacus to calculate. Has a Bead rating instead of Star

Sorry Coach Pinkel, but Mizzou won't be winning any championships as long as they are in the SEC...regardless who their HC happens to be. Joining a tougher conference is only beneficial if you can actually COMPETE in said conference, and Missouri cannot, will not, be competitive in the SEC.

"For perfect on-time attendance to the first team meeting of the Spring, you are awarded these comemorative tchotchkes. Everyone, stand and give yourselves a hand."

Are we discussing football or group therapy?

February 7, 2013  01:37 PM ET

Psssst. [In my best whisper voice] "Gary. Maybe you should look at the rankings."

This is exactly what CMR did after whiffing on all those 5 stars in GA this year. Tunsil hurt the worst. But CMR's take was "as far as I'm concerned this is the #1 class in America"

To be fair, what else is he gonna say.

Same for pinkel IMO
