Kimmo Timonen to receive 1-year extension

03:28 PM ET 02.07 | The Philadelphia Flyers are going to sign defenseman Kimmo Timonen to a one-year extension worth $6 million, according to multiple reports on Wednesday night. The timing of such a deal is rather strange, given the length of the deal and the point in the season. Regardless, it appears Philadelphia is looking to avoid a situation similar to last season where they lost Matt Carle to the Tampa Bay Lightning because they didn't sign him prior to the start of free agency. Also, considering the slim pickings on this summer's unrestricted market and the holes in the Flyers defense, the team can't afford to lose a player like Timonen who is one of the key pieces on the corps.

When you have swiss cheese as a blue line and you're the only quality guy back there, I suppose you've got all the leverage.

Sheesh what a story. One could interpret this as he is one of the reasons or pieces to the holy defense
