05:31 PM ET 02.07 | The New York Islanders have acquired goaltender Tim Thomas via trade with the Boston Bruins on Thursday evening. In exchange for Thomas, the Bruins will receive a conditional second round draft selection in the 2014 or 2015 NHL Draft. Thomas is sitting out the 2013 season that he can focus on his friends, family and faith. With one-year remaining on a contract that pays $5 million annually, some speculated that the team might move Thomas to a team looking to get above the salary cap floor. This is apparently what the Islanders are hoping to achieve. Needing to get above the floor by Friday, the team now has insurance that they will be cap compliant. Thomas has no interest in playing this season, according to previous reports.

The Islanders are always running after trouble. They'll trade away a 2nd round pick (which could very well end up as a pick in the 31-40 range) just to get above the salary floor, rather than just pay the guys that they have or make moves to acquire talent that will remain in the franchise beyond this off-season (the Iles have a ton of contracts to negotiate this summer).
They'll have money to burn this off-season, but they better be sure of their move because if they buy out Dipietro they'll be looking for 2 goalies, 5 d and 8 forwards. It's actually really depressing to look at, regardless of the young talent and the eventual move to Brooklyn.
This is simply wow. Just. wow.

they're still paying 2.2 million per season for this year and 2 more years for Yashin. Seriously depressing stuff. I bet the rest of the league would even allow the Isles a special provision to use the amnesty to write off Yashin, just because the whole thing looks so pathetic.

The talking heads make it seem like they're gonna get rid of Visnovsky very soon..that way the Isles will be cap compliant...so the question is where is Visnovsky gonna get traded..Detroit maybe ?

Yeah even more ridiculous is when they invited Cashin to try out for their team...he wouldve been the 1st player ever to receive 2 checks from the same team.

Sheyet! TWO more years for Yashin? And he's been gone for how long now? Twelve years or so? Sheyet! Will they ever learn? Wonders never cease to amaze!

What a disaster. They just keep making these hostile transactions without any actual goal. I hope for them that they can get something for Visnovsky, but really, what's a team going to give in return for a player becomnig a UFA that has made it abundantly clear that he is not interested in remaining an Islander and has also clearly stated that he is chasing money (including a potential KHL move)?
As a gm, the only way you give up something decent for Visnovsky is if you feel that you have a legit chance of signing him after the season.
Add in the fact that they gave up a second rounder for Thomas and we're talking about making how much in the end? That's alot of costly moves to end up with very little. To me it seems like an incredibly stupid way to go about building a team.
Perhaps Snow should get out of the hockey business and start flipping houses instead. Less risk.
