Ravens won't mortgage future to repeat

08:01 AM ET 02.08 | For some historical perspective, the last time the Ravens won a Super Bowl, they did everything in their power to repeat the feat -- something unlikely to happen this time around. Although the Ravens have placed a high priority on signing quarterback Joe Flacco to a long-term deal, the team has no intention of overpaying potential free agents or having several players restructure their contracts in order to keep the current roster intact. That's what happened 12 years ago. ... [Said GM Ozzie Newsome:] "We're not going to be restricting contracts, do all of those different things just to be able to maintain this team just to make another run. We're not doing that. But that doesn't mean that we don't want to try and go and repeat."

Ozzie gets it...
Get Flacco signed... figure out who needs to be kept... and go hit that draft board.

They have the best drafts year after year, and it's all because of Ozzie.
He should be in the HOF for his GM skills, alone.

They should actually improve at linebacker with RL retiring. Emotional leader but his legs were gone three years ago. If they are able to keep Flacco they have as much chance as the other eight teams that do.

Keeping the team intact last time didn't work (although, an early injury to Jamal Lewis and a QB change to Elvis Grbac didn't help either). And then, they were forced to blow things up completely, and it took a couple of years to recover.
I'm definitely interested to see how they do it this time. It probably means a lot of familiar faces are going bye-bye.

Thanks to Ozzie's brilliant drafting, I'm not disappointed at all. I'm sure young players such as Webb, Pitta, Arthur Jones, Jimmy and Torrey Smith, McPhee, Upshaw, Osemele, Pierce...etc will step up there game.

It is the only option open to them. As much as $5 million over next years cap now, and that is without Flacco being added. Youth will be served, but Ozzie forgets that the emergence of the Patriots after the last superbowl win in 2000 and the fact they won with a great defense and no offense to speak of did them in after that year.

Ozzie has no choice, dump what he can to open enough cap space to at least tag Flacco. Without Joe they are a .8-8/9-7team.

They wont mortgage the future and candidly, if Flacco does not get paid, and Ed Reed walks, the Ravens are a 6 win team next season.
They will have to pay both if they expect to keep them...
Not to mention, Lewis is retiring.
The Rat Birds are doing nothing soon.

I suspect Ray Lewis used PEDs to recover from his torn triceps injury. Read more: http://the-nba-insider.blogspot.com/2013/01/do-you-believe-ray-lewis-used. html

I'll be interested to see how Flacco does next year. He had a great run in the playoffs but has been average to above average over the long haul. Has he permanently upped his game a level or did he just get hot? Remember, Eli looked like a HOF'er last year and was average this year. The top QBs do it year in and year out.

Ozzie is a great GM. Too bad the Bears don't have a decent one.
