Why Isles wanted Thomas, who'll never play there

08:18 AM ET 02.08 | On the upside, the Islanders have acquired a Vezina Trophy- and Stanley Cup-winning goaltender. But Tim Thomas, currently on indefinite leave from playing hockey, almost certainly will never dress for the Isles and will never earn a dime from his new team. ... [The deal] is purely a salary-cap transaction. As of Friday, the 20th day of the league season, all teams must be cap- compliant, which means over the $44.3-million floor. The Islanders activated Lubomir Visnovsky yesterday after he passed his physical, which made them compliant. The move for Thomas, who carries a $5-million cap hit despite his being suspended by the Bruins, guards against Visnovsky's possible departure to tend to his son, who is due to have surgery in Slovakia this weekend.

Why Snow bailed Boston out here is beyond me. If they are fearing Viz is going to depart for his son, then let him go. Fans aren't exactly high on the guy to begin with. Let Boston deal with their own problems.

Lately for Garth, it's been two steps forward, two steps back. A part of me thinks that Wang is keeping Snow's spending at bay, so he's just doing what he can to stay compliant and not over spend. I truly think the Isles are stockpiled with young talent and could add some awesome veteran pieces once they move to Brooklyn. My worry is moves like this and all the other unorthodox crap they do is going to steer guys away. New arena or not.

By 2015, I'd love to see the owner either sell the team or stop being so damn frugal.

In the end Chiarelli looks like a genius and Snow looks like an idiot.

So, par for the course then.

I think Snow has more good moments than bad. My problem is with Wang than anybody else. Snow would look this bad on a move like this if the owner would spend money.

Not fully read up on the conditions but....you potentially give up a second round pick for someone who may or may not ever enter your goal crease just for the sake of spending the money you need to reach the cap min?

The condition of the 2nd rounder is that TT actually plays a game, which he won't. So they pretty much got him for free and to fill cap space.

still an odd move. What if he decides he wants to play now?

Good question. Maybe they'd just play DP a few games until he ends up on IR and then activate TT!??!

He wouldn't pass the physical. This is a very interesting new hole/option in the new deal. Isles want to stay above the minimum but not pay out hard cash , Bruins free up cap space....interesting !

Instead of paying money to have actual talent play in actual games. Amazing concept. I can't believe that the Isles haven't alienated even the few remaining die-hard hold outs.

This move just screams pathetic.
