bruins hope to begin contract talks with Tuukka Rask, says GM

04:02 PM ET 02.08 | The Boston Bruins are planning on beginning discussions about an extension with goaltender Tuukka Rask prior to the end of the 2013 season. Having traded Tim Thomas to the New York Islanders, the team now has the flexibility to allocate assets else where. Namely, to Rask. General manager Peter Chiarelli denied that any thing was imminent, or that Rask's performance this season had any thing specifically to do with the timing of the trade, but did admit that contract talks was something the club was interested in engaging with Rask. Rask is playing out the final year of a one-year contract that pays him a pro-rated $3.5 million this season. He will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

5.5 - 6 million per year..i really dont see him pulling in more than 6 per year.....but if i was the GM i'd wait till after the play-offs are done.

Are you sure Conference Finals is what it takes to make that?
If that's the case, he may feel the need to be paid more than Carey Price and I think he's making around 6.5 mill per year for the next six years!

Timmy was never playing a game for the Bs again. Both sides knew that. Rask and management both agreed that a 1 year deal was a gamble they both wanted to make. If he plays well in the playoffs, he'll make another 1-1.5 mil next year. If he doesn't... well, look for them to try to get another 1 year deal out of him and wait out Subban.

I'm thinking those numbers are a bit low, but they might make Subban a back up for his first year in the bigs, although the Yotes and Wings brought up a rookie with good results

Agree that TT was a non-factor in this...he was never playing in a B's uni again after screwing the team this year. If Rask continues to play the way he has, he will cash in, and deservedly so. They have been locking up the young talent, and Rask will be no exception.

Trading TT had more to do with providing the B's some financial flexibility than it did with Rask's performance.
