08:11 AM ET 02.11 | Sometimes, even a king has to wait. Mariners ace Felix Hernandez is expected to start spring training as usual this week despite reports Sunday that an elbow issue had delayed his finalizing a contract extension. The issue was said to have surfaced last week when Hernandez reportedly took a physical ahead of the extension being signed off on. ... As for the state of Hernandez's elbow, Zduriencik would not comment further. "I'm just not going to comment on that while negotiations are ongoing," Zduriencik said. "That's our policy. We don't comment on any of that stuff." Rumors about a problem with Hernandez's physical began percolating on Saturday morning, after the Mariners failed to officially announce a contract extension.

jgb, I was thinking the same thing!!! I'm a M's fan, but they must back out of this deal. Felix is a very good picther, but the M's need more hitting power and if they don't go out and get some hitting, Felix will continue to only win 13 or 14 games, like he did the last three years. Just my opinion!!

Felix signed a contract in 2010, that included the following: "he will receive a $3.5 million signing bonus and salaries of $6.5 million this season (2010), $10 million in 2011, $18.5 million in 2012, $19.5 million in 2013 and $20 million in 2014. Hernandez also will have a limited no-trade clause". Why not play the current contract out until 2014??? If Felix is all that hyped up about staying in seatlle, then he will sign a new contract in 2014!!!! If the M's were smart, they wouldn't sign Felix to an extension now. Just my opinion!!

agree with you, though the M's can't sign him to any extension because injuries could starting been a problem as soon as this year!!!

should the M's sign to any extension hernandez? it has to be with alot incentives, plus he should earn his contract money/the pitcher most pitch 230 innings in the first 3 years/the pitcher most win 15 to 20 games in the first 3 years on his new contract as well/and last he should stay out of the DL as much as he can,,,unless otherwise!!
