Elbow issue threatens to kill King Felix deal

07:26 PM ET 02.11 | Late last week, it was reported that the Seattle Mariners and Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez had agreed on a deal that would make the King the highest paid pitcher in baseball. But while the terms in the deal have apparently been agreed upon, a lingering elbow issue seems to be holding up the finalization of the deal. If the Mariners end up killing the deal, it wouldn't be the first time in recent history that a big contract has been rescinded due to an injury concern. The Boston Red Sox pulled out of an agreed $39 million deal with catcher Mike Napoli after concerns over a hip condition came about, and a big trade between the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Angels was killed due to a hip issue there as well. But while there is a possibility the Mariners could pull out of the the deal, general manager manager Jack Zduriencik has told MLB.com that he's seen Hernandez pitch recently and he's been throwing normal for sometime now.

That's why pitchers need to get the big payday as soon as they can. They are all just one pitch from blowing out an elbow or a shoulder. The elbow is much easier these days. Tommy John has become quite routine. It does take a couple of seasons to get back to normal, and some never get back to full capabilities.

While I usually don't mind your posts, to call Hernandez an overpaid loser while using an image of ARod as your avatar just seems...odd.

Felix signed a contract in 2010, that included the following: "he will receive a $3.5 million signing bonus and salaries of $6.5 million this season (2010), $10 million in 2011, $18.5 million in 2012, $19.5 million in 2013 and $20 million in 2014. Hernandez also will have a limited no-trade clause". Why not play the current contract out until 2014??? If Felix is all that hyped up about staying in seatlle, then he will sign a new contract in 2014!!!! If the M's were smart, they wouldn't sign Felix to an extension now. Just my opinion!!
