08:14 AM ET 02.12 | For some, contract negotiations during the season offer little more than an unnecessary distraction. Justin Verlander, who has two years left on his contract with the Detroit Tigers, said [Monday] he hasn't decided whether he will have such a policy for the coming season. Speculation has begun on if and when the Tigers will try to sign him to an extension and not even let him get close to free agency after the 2014 season. Verlander again made clear today that he wants to remain with the Tigers. "I love Detroit," he said. "I feel like I'm a kindred part of that town. I grew up in front of these fans and earned my way into their hearts." Verlander broke into the majors with the Tigers in 2005.

Yes he'll sign an extension. And then promptly send a thank you card to Felix Hernandez.

He will be 30 years old next week. 32 when his present contract is up. You bet he would negotiate a new contract now. Does anybody really think the Tigers or anybody else would give him a seven year $175 million deal two years from now like the Felix signing?

I'm sure Verlander has no idea that Felix just got a new deal.

Some of the nicest suburbs in the nation are in metro Detroit, Bloomfield and Birmingham. The Great Lakes offer some amazing boating and fishing within a few hours too.

Rather than sign him to a 7 year deal when his contract expires in 2014, they may just extend his current deal 5 years meaning he'd be 37 when the deal ends. I'm not sure I'd do that for any pitcher, but if one pitcher is worthy it would probably be him because he's incredibly durable. I don't think he's ever had a stint on the DL, he's a classic power pitcher like Nolan Ryan with great size 6'5" and 225 lbs, most scouts think his delivery and mechanics are great (not high effort and/or violent). 30+ starts in each of his first 7 seasons.
He seems to be a throw back, work horse starter.

I don't think the figures will be exactly the same, but I think Verlander's leverage in negotiations sky-rocketed because of Hernandez' deal.

Agree - Roy Halladay was the same way, but broke down really quickly.

So you think Roy's done, eh?

He's definitely not the dominate pitcher he was in Toronto. And his division is a whole lot tougher than it was a few years ago.

the indians has signed bourn to a 4 years 48 millions deal,, i think this is a fair deal, the indians would likely surrender the first draft pick in june, plus they have to give some cash considerations to the braves or the league??whoever comes first!!!

I don't see either Giambi or Dice-K making it back to the majors. You never know, of course, injuries are hard to predict. Dice-K was simply awful last year. I think his ERA was 8.71. Hate watching him pitch too, its like a recurring nightmare.
