Stoops sends message: All is not well

08:17 AM ET 02.12 | With James Patton out at Oklahoma, Bob Stoops' model of stability took another hit. [Stoops] went 13 years without firing a coach. Now he's dismissed two in 13 months -- Willie Martinez after the 2011 season, Patton after the 2012 season. The firing of Patton is a counter to those who say Stoops is comfortable and content. Staff changes are the result of success -- coaches getting head coaching jobs -- or failure. In the latter, a head coach isn't pleased, so he makes a change. Stoops clearly is not thrilled with the direction of the OU program, no matter what he said about winning a Big 12 co-championship. Stoops knows that the Sooners have lost some ground in a conference they not so long dominated.

How about a Big 10+2-4+2=12 conference discussion?

I read where the Big 12 signed exactly ZERO 5-star recruits this year & finished 4th as a conference in recruiting rankings.......does the Big 12 hold on to the #2 football conference rankings going forward?
What about the contenders? Does it stay Okie and Texas, or does WVU TCU and maybe Baylor or Tech push in there? Do you see the conf staying at 10 teams or expanding to 12-16?

Just curious as to what the rusty cows, Okies, Froggies, etc see coming out of this conference over the next 5 yrs.

Depending on rating services, there were one-two 5*.

0U has lost some of its recruiting mojo in Texas. I know they lost 1 to Baylor, 2 to TCU and 2 to aTm. They now are going to CA for many of their higher ranked recruits. I really think that no matter how good the coach, there is a 10-12 year life at a school. 0U may be going through that now.

On b12, I don't anything that brings the conference as a whole down. If UTx doesn't get their breakout season most are expecting, it could be a downturn. But, with all the underclassmen at TCU, Baylor and OKlite, they should pick up the slack. UTx returns more starters than anyone in country.

Oklahoma has been the most overrated program in college football the last few years.

Their defense has been horrible.

Personally, I do not believe they deserved to be in the Top 25 this past year.

ok

1. I don't pay much attention to recruiting rankings. I follow UTx recruiting and can't speak for the rest of the conference. Stoops is a heck of a recruiter and always seems to uncover talent that wasn't p|mped by Rivals or 247. Same for Patterson at TCU. I could care less how Rivals 247 or ESPiN evaluate things.

2. I pay even less attention to conference rankings. Sorry.

3. Not a lot of QB experience is returning in the Big 12. Ash and Pachal are now the QBs with the most experience. UTx is returning a boatload of starters, but I think the conference is wide open. Never underestimate OU.

4. Bowlsby wants a championship game which would require 12 teams or a waiver. Current 10 team arrangement distributes more TV money per team. Some of these schools have never had this much money before and might vote to stay pat. I would love to get back to 12 teams but only by adding the right 2. FSU, Clemson, ND ... teams of that caliber.

Isn't Stoops the one who hired Martinez and Patton?

February 12, 2013  01:45 PM ET

Martinez got canned at Ga and reently at Zero U. I see where he is now on the Tenn coaching staff. Hope he is renting and not buying houses-could get expensive.

Wow, now I hear another coach has been let go, Shipp
