Smith, Barkley expected to air it out at combine

07:59 AM ET 02.13 | The top two QB prospects this time last year -- Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III -- chose not to throw at the NFL Scouting Combine. Both quarterbacks were locked into the top two slots of the draft. They preferred to throw to receivers they knew in a more comfortable environment. So that's what they did. Don't expect a similar situation to play out with this year's (far less celebrated) quarterback class. Case in point [via @Gil_Brandt on Twitter]: "Spoke w/ Geno Smith's rep, Jeff Nalley. Says Geno will do full workout at #NFLCombine. Good sign. Usually when one jumps in, others follow." It's also been reported that USC's Matt Barkley will throw. If the top quarterbacks in this class both go full workout, others at the position will surely follow.

Both of these guys need to throw at the combine... it's the difference between being a 3rd rounder and a 2nd rounder.

What's the point of the Combine if guys don't put out and show off their skills? They can do the Wonderlic online.

Well, at least some of them can figure out how to do the Wonderlic online.

They are going to throw for a living in the NFL, so they better throw at the combine. Neither of them have the abilities of Luck or Griffin, so they need to prove themselves.

And Geno Smith will throw bullets at the work outs and some idiot team will draft him and kick themselves for not looking at the game film on the guy and realizing he is what he does in games.

The Combine would be in danger of becoming irrelevant if QB's decide they don't want to throw until their Pro Day.

A combine separated the grain from the plant and discards the chaff . Which is what the NFL combine is supposed to do. Separate the Chaff/ posers from the Grain / real players. But the NFL combine as a more important purpose. It has become a media event that sells lots of commercial time, glamorizes the NFL, and makes the NFL a bunch of money. For years the NFL Draft was held behind closed doors, now it is a big 3 day TV extravaganza. I think the NFL Network and ESPN do show highlights of College Pro days.

So now Barkley is going to throw at the combine, is this a truth or rumor?
I think it is a rumor in order to boost TV ratings.

Most scouts and coaches already got their mind made up as to how high or low to draft the guy, players have had great combines and did poorly as a pro, some guys dont get invited and become all stars and it happens more often than ever before!
