Noel's 'gruesome' injury jeopardizes future

He clutched at his left knee, everything suddenly and painfully in doubt. ... The greater issue is Noel's future, and the way it is put at risk by a system that forced him to play college ball for a year instead of going straight into the NBA draft. Noel may have gotten hurt in 2013 no matter where he was playing, but at least he would be under contract and well-compensated. ... Florida's Patric Young, who wound up beneath the basket with Noel, told the Palm Beach Post: "His leg was wobbly, knee looked dislocated. It was gruesome. I don't want to think about it."

I'm calling BS on the "jeopardizing his future" garbage and how the system "forced him to play in college". These have become 2 of the most popular catch-phrases used by sports journalists. It's lazy hack journalism without a shred of intellectual rigor.

BS! Noels is enrolled at a prestigious university. He can work on that degree while he rehabs. He has more than 1 option in life.

Correct me if I am wrong, lets say he never plays another minute of hoops. The school will honor his scholly and he will get his degree right??? He may never make nba money, but he should be more than fine.

Yes, shame on the the NBA for implementing the 1 year rule. Poor Noel didn't get his chance to sign a contact, become compensated, and screw over the team that drafted him.

It's the job of the NBA team to draft wisely. It has zero to do with Noel entering the league at 19 versus 18.
You can't call these kids adults in one sentence, and children that need protection in the next. At 18, you're a man and you are allowed to make a living however you choose. Let the kids jump straight to the NBA; after-all they're the ones mortgaging their ultimate future by turning down college, but it's still their God/societal given right to do so.

I agree! If a 18 or 19 year old man wants to enter the NBA draft, right out of High School that should be okay, but IMO, if a school offers you a scholarship and you take it, you should be not allowed to enter the draft until after your junior year in college. Just my opinion!!

The 'system' didn't force him to play college ball.....it only barred hin from the NBA for a year.
He could've done what Brandon Jennings did.....play a year of pro ball in Europe for the year he was becoming 'old enough' to play in the NBA.

Yeah, I'm serious. These are NCAA boards and we love college/amateur sports. So yeah in here the NBA is not that relevant or important.
I used to be a college basketball fanatic but one-and-done players are the major reason I lost interest. The NBA is a one-dimensional league of overpaid under-developed players with little commitment to defense.
I do, however, realize that San Antonio is a one team town (Spurs) so NBA is probably more important to the fans down there.

The greatest issue is this kid's EDUCATION and his STATE OF MIND! I realize that we have become the most masochistic society ever known to man, and that money is more important than nearly EVERYTHING ELSE - but there was a CHILD screaming in pain, scared, hurt, and heartbroken and all people want to talk about is his NBA future and his draft stock. He's a kid!
I hope he gets his education. Recovers without setback. Has family who love him and care more about him than his hoops game.
Then he will undoubtedly pick basketball up again and be successful in life too.
