Clear path for Gonzaga to top ranking

08:15 AM ET 02.13 | A West Coast Conference team ranked No. 1 in the final regular-season poll? If Gonzaga (23-2) beats St. Mary's in Moraga on Thursday -- a big if -- and keeps winning while others continue to fall by the wayside, the Bulldogs could become the first non-major-conference team in 17 years to be No. 1 in the final Associated Press poll. ... But the question remains: Would pollsters deign to rank a team from the WCC No. 1 on their final ballots? In 2004, Gonzaga was ranked No. 2 in the final regular-season USA Today coaches' poll and No. 3 in the final AP poll, but it received just three first-place votes in the two polls combined. The Bulldogs have never been ranked No. 1 and received only three first-place votes combined in the two polls this week.

Who cares? A boatload of teams get into the tournament in March. It's not March yet.
