04:54 PM ET 02.13 | ig part of the Detroit Lions' offseason plan revolves around quarterback Matthew Stafford's contract. He isn't set to become a free agent or anything like that, but it's important for the Lions to get him a new deal. He currently has a cap hit of around $20.8 million for 2013, and getting him a new deal would free up a lot of cap space for the Lions. Essentially, this is the same situation the Lions were in with wide receiver Calvin Johnson last year. Getting Johnson a new deal gave them much-needed cap room, and getting Stafford a new deal would do the same. That's why signing Stafford to a long-term contract is at or near the top of the Lions' list of priorities for the offseason, although general manager Martin Mayhew admitted last week that talks haven't really begun just yet with Stafford. They paid too much for Stafford to begin with for the little production they have gotten out of him, granted one years was because they couldn't protect him as well, but he's made too many judgement errors for me to want to stay with his style of play, let the current one expire and trade him for a dual threat because Kellen Moore's arm is not strong enough for pro ball.
The need a whole new system and a new OC, with the weapons they have a decent dual threat QB will spark some life into that system they have - IMHO.
