Clock ticking on Price's tenure

08:03 AM ET 02.14 | If there's any writing on the wall for David Price, it comes in the form of Felix Hernandez's new contract. For all his love for Tampa -- and Price does love the area by all accounts; he recently bought a home in the Harbour Island section of Tampa, though if you ask him he'll tell you he lives in his hometown of Murfreesboro, Tenn. -- this is going to be trickier, much trickier. When he's asked if he'd like to stay a Ray long-term, he doesn't hesitate. "I'm up for it," he said. "I love it here." But Price, a Vanderbilt man who's whip smart, understands the Rays aren't playing in the same financial ballpark. ... "It's going to be tough," one Rays person says, honestly, about their chances to keep Price beyond the three arbitration years he has left.

There's a lot of baseball to be played between now and then.

He should spend this year thinking about life without his facial hair. When he signs with the Yankees, its gonna have to go.

This is not a story - the rays will get the next 2 years and then deal him

You always hope that a player will choose lifestyle over money - but it is hard to turn down the megabucks for the hometown. It is not a foregone conclusion the best free agents will go to the Yankees anymore. Take a look at what is going on in L.A.

That's all true except the part of it being difficult to turn down megabucks. Nobody does that. Price will get an offer from a different team, Tampa will be nowhere close, and he will sign a contract with the new team. Will it be the Yankees? Probably.
As far as what's going on in L.A. - could you be more specific? Lakers? Angels? Dodgers?
What did your comment mean?

February 14, 2013  04:51 PM ET

Mostly commenting on the Dodgers and Angels - both have mega salaries at this time. The Dodgers are signing a TV deal worth billions and when that happens - the check book will open further

THIS is the guy that the Royals should have demanded if they were willing to deal Wil Myers.

Going to Vanderbilt makes one "whip" smart? Isn't Vanderbilt in the SEC?

LMAO, yeah like that would have ever happened. I'm guessing the Royals wanted to make the deal. Price is not on the trad table (yet). 2 years.

Very little financial difference between Seattle & Tampa Bay. If Price wants to get it done he will.
