Will dropping FCS opponents make Big Ten a top conference?

07:11 PM ET 02.14 | The Big Ten is making a pretty incredible move that will no doubt affect the face of the FCS and the Big Ten, as the conference has announced it will be ceasing its relationship with the FCS and will no longer be scheduling games against opponents outside of the FBS. Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez made the announcement and it's one that could catch on in other conferences across college sports. "The non-conference schedule in our league is ridiculous," Alvarez said on WIBA-AM in Madison, Wis. "It's not very appealing. So we've made an agreement that our future games will all be Division I schools. It will not be FCS schools." Historically, big name conferences in the FBS have cuddled with schools from the FCS which has caused a major problem when it comes to the competitiveness of games. The Big Ten isn't the only conference to schedule games against opponents that are clearly outmatched, but they are the first to put their foot down and say they won't put up with scheduling one-sided contests any more.

The B1G is dropping FCS teams so they can play better teams.
Bring on the Sun Belt teams and the Mountain West teams (other than Boise State)!

That's good for tOSU's in-state rival with Miami (OH), but bad news for their other in-state rival (Youngstown St.).

SEC has the Sun Belt and Conf USA booked up for a while.
MidAmerican conference makes sense for the BigTen.

They only played YSU twice as a favor to Tressell... a big payday. Not on future schedule. There are plenty of in-state Div I teams (Miami (O), Kent State, Toledo, Bowling Green, Ohio U, Akron, and Cincy) OSU can play.

Actually, if my quick rankings chart is accurate, sec plays about 50% more FCS than Sun Belt or CUSA

Sparty beat over rated Boise last year. We're scheduled for a home and home a few years down the road. Don't let facts get in the way of comments.

Did anyone notice that ND has not been scheduling FCS teams for many years (can't wait to hear the Haters comments)!

The B1G will be increasing conference games to nine or ten per year. No room for FCS schools when strength of schedule is a factor in play-off selection.

This will hurt the FCS schools financially, especially the in state schools who bag a big payday! The good news is the Big Ten won't be penalized in the BCS computer rankings for strength of schedule.Hopefully other top conferences will follow suit and do the same.
