Harper sets 'crazy' goals for season

08:16 AM ET 02.15 | Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper each added 10 pounds of muscle in the offseason and look the part now more than ever. The change in Strasburg, as if he somehow also redirected another 10 pounds directly to his shoulders, makes your head snap. ... The pitcher and hitter, at 233 and 230 pounds respectively, look like 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-3 Rodin sculptures. ... Harper says his only goal is "World Series." But he lets the truth slip out around the edges: "There are [personal] goals in my head, but I'm not going to share them. People will think I'm crazy." What's eating these guys, pushing them, aside from their competitive natures? Both work like demons are on their trail.

There's nothing wrong with setting high goals for yourself.

Harper will hit 30 HR this upcoming season.

February 15, 2013  09:05 AM ET

The big question here is, will he still have a pointed head in 2013?

February 15, 2013  09:20 AM ET

To achieve a lot of your goals especially MVP your team will again have to make it to the playoffs.

Guess they're on the juicing program. Good times....

February 15, 2013  09:58 AM ET

That lineup is just going to be silly this year. They almost don't need any pitching. They could win every game 10-9 if they had to.

I think he's primed for a breakout season.

I think Harper wants to avoid a Sophmore slump.... And after getting a near taste last year... there hungry.... GOOD FOR THEM.

February 15, 2013  11:08 AM ET

Great season last year for a 19-year old. Especially with all the focus and attention by the media and Uts.

I like the way he plays the game but unfortunately he's on a rival team so my enjoyment of his skills are mitigated somewhat.

Yea its crazy to even think a baseball player would juice up in the off season

February 15, 2013  12:14 PM ET

harper would be up to 30 homeruns/strasburg likely win 18 games this season,,

February 15, 2013  12:57 PM ET

Sophomore slump looming for Harper. Teams have figured him out, now it is his turn to adjust to teams attacking his weakness. This year will tell if he is truly a great star, or just above average solid player.

February 15, 2013  01:04 PM ET

Harper's goal is probably 50 HRs and Strasburg 20 wins. I see both as attainable for these guys, barring injury.

Hard to tell under the batting helmet or ball cap he wears.
Or
Who the eff cares? What does his hairstyle have to do with anything?

Strasburg - could win 20.
Harper - more like 30 - 35 HR.

Agreed. However, Harper has already proved that he can adjust and I think he may have already experienced his sophomore slump. The Yankees figured him out ,in mid season, and gave a template to teams how to pitch to him. He had a lousy July. Harper adjusted and by September, he was ,again, the most feared hitter in the lineup.

Do you personally think Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg are using PEDs this off season?

I think you're behind the curve on that one. Here are Harper's OPSs, by month last year:

Apr: .875
May: .860
Jun: .780
Jul: .619
Aug: .748
Sept: 1.043

He OPSed 1.045 for about the last third of the season.
