08:20 AM ET 02.15 | While prospects are visiting Austin for the first Texas Longhorns Junior Day this weekend, Texas extended an offer to Ponte Vedra Beach (Fla.) linebacker Dillon Bates. If the name Bates sounds familiar, it should to Dallas Cowboys fans -- Dillon is the son of longtime Cowboys special-team standout Bill. ... The younger Bates is a better prospect than his father was coming out of Knoxville, Tennessee when Bill joined the Volunteer program and met his future wife. At 6-3 and 220 pounds, Dillon is two inches taller and almost 10 pounds heavier than his father was during his playing career. ... [Dillon Bates] has said that he's open to all possibilities, hardly unexpected for a prospect with national offers like those from national powers.

The older Bates was a hitting machine. He brought a blue collar git-'er-done attitude to a soft Dallas team playing that awful flex defense at the time. Bates would lay the wood to running backs that got past the linebackers. He was fun to watch and was the consummate team player.

I would imagine Tennessee (dad's alma mater) has the inside track to the younger Bates from a recruiting standpoint.

Not sure.
