08:22 AM ET 02.15 | Mother knows best? Miami (Fla.) Booker T. five-star linebacker Matthew Thomas was the crown jewel of Florida State's 2013 recruiting class. The 'Noles had to battle other top programs such as Miami, USC, Alabama and Georgia. In the end Jimbo Fisher got his guy, but there were several twists and turns along the way. ... Josh Newberg: At what point did you know you were going to sign with Florida State? Matthew Thomas: Well I decided that morning (Signing Day). The night before I was honestly thinking USC. I was trying to get the LOI and everything ready and signed first. But my mom didn't want to sign it. She didn't want me to go to USC. JN: So if your mom would have signed the papers you'd be a Trojan right now? MT: Yeah, I would have been a Trojan.

Hey, I wouldn't want my son playing for Lane Kiffen and 3,000 miles away from home. There are plenty of comparable schools closer to home and with coaches who aren't total sleezeballs.

Well, we stopped recruiting him. So, they really weren't fighting us for him at the end.

Looks like he's really committed to building a winner up at FSU.
Glad he's not a Cane!

If the kid is a Mommy's boy, then it is best he stays close to her and his family!!! Also Los Angeles is not for a wimp and a Mommy's boy. Good luck Matthew Thomas with your career!!!

If it was about distance, he would have gone to Miami. I'm thinking the "Kiffin Factor" had something to do with this.

I don't know that we can necessarily equate what happened to him being a mama's boy. If she has to sign the papers, he really has no say in it except to the point of convincing his mother. I'd imagine he worked on her as much as possible and she was not moved.

So 247 Sports, a commercial venture that makes $$ selling subscriptions, publishes the transcript of a interview with a recruit.
This is not news - this is 247 manufacturing some drama, pandering to their target market, telling them what they want to hear, hoping for more subscriptions.
SI should stick to credible news sources instead of snippets from FanSided, 247, Rivals etc ...

Solid point but still JK. Can't a parent (not just this one obviously) support a kid in their decision on where they want to go to school??? God forbid he makes his own decision on what he wants to do with the next 4 years of his life.

Talk about a crappy deal. Any bets on this kid flaming out at FSU and then transferring to someplace he wants to be? Maybe he was trying to get away for a reason.

Nobody signed more 5* than we did. We signed less than HALF a class than everyone else in the country and the class is still in the top 15. Not sure i would call that falling apart even if it isn't a deep class. Plus, we have 5 extra spots for next year. Fine by me.

Yes. It's wasn't a praise of the mother. I just figured you cannot blame a kid, if their parents won't relent.

At least she didn't steal the document, run out of the school, go home and hide it, and then hire Johnny Cochran's law firm to defend her

In three or four years, when FSU is hoisting the Championship trophy and USC is still outside the top 25, I am guessing he will be happy he listened to mommy. Now, as for you and your comment.. maybe if mommy had actually loved you then maybe you wouldn't be so jealous of this kid.

It could very well be the "Kiffin Factor" that the "mommy" didn't like, but again it should have been Matthew Thomas decision as an "adult" where he wanted to go, not his mommy's decision!!!!

LOL,. that's some funny stuff!!! It has nothing to do with Mommy's love for a kid!!! Keep in mind that Matthew Thomas is an "adult" and should make his own decisions. I have an idea, why doesn't FSU hire his mommy to change his diapers, if and when he craps them!!! :-)

piratey, I never said that Matthew Thomas should never listen to his mom's advice, but come on now the kid is 18 years old and has to start making his own decisions!!! The title of this article is: "Mom wouldn't sign NLI for USC". Maybe I should be asking is the kid 17 or 18 years old?? Does a 18 year old "adult" need his Mommy's signature on the NLI???
