09:25 AM ET 02.16 | CBSSports.com has learned that the Lakers have engaged in preliminary trade discussions with an unlikely trade partner regarding Dwight Howard: their fierce rival, the Boston Celtics. The centerpieces of the possible deal, which hasn't gained any traction, would be Howard and Rajon Rondo. The imagination runs rampant with the tantalizing possibilities. Other significant pieces would have to be involved, since Rondo's $11 million salary is substantially less than Howard's $19.5 million.

Here's what I don't understand about the Lakers. OKC has a bunch of young studs in their prime and they come up short. Miami had this "Big Three" in their prime and came up short. Obviously even guys in their prme like Lebron and Durant need time to gel and to take their lumps in the process. What on earth would make LA think that a 35 year old egomaniac, a declining Spaniard, a 7 footer coming off back surgery, a 40 year old point coming off injury, and a bunch of guys named Jody would be a title contender. Thinking about it logically, maybe their ceiling is a 4-5 seed? Maybe we should have seen this coming? Maybe not as completely disastrous, perhaps, but still...

But that ignores the fact that the two biggest pieces, the C and PF, were respectively 50% strength and on the downside of his career. Throw into the mix a guy who needs 30 shots a game and a PG who is wearing a Steve Nash mask and what could possibly have been the upside? 45-37? This team has no bench whatsoever and far too many nights they have to rely on a certifiable maniac ironically named World Peace to play the part of hero. Mike Brown, Mike D'Antoni, Phil Jackson...nobody was going to make this work. Phil might have milked 47 wins out of this team, but that is their top, top ceiling.
Hey, I like Pau and Nash. Maybe if this was 2006 I'd be really excited, but its 2013 and Nash is done and Pau is slipping badly. And I agree with Bill Simmons on this one...I think Howard might be done as the dominant center of the game. A 7 footer with back issues? That's worse than Z's feet or Oden's legs. A bad back turns a 27 year old stud into a 35 year old statue almost overnight.
