Lions want Matthew Stafford long-term

09:15 AM ET 02.16 | Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand said it is important to rework quarterback Matthew Stafford's current contract, but not for the obvious reason. Stafford has two more years remaining on his contract, and will earn a base salary of $12 million in 2013, but his salary cap hit is $20.3 million. He will earn $11 million in 2014 ($19.3 million salary cap number) and $15 million in 2015 ($17.7 million salary cap number). Despite the obvious need to free up cap space, Lewand said reworking Stafford's deal is essential because he wants the quarterback to remain in Detroit long-term. "Matthew Stafford is our quarterback, and we hope is our quarterback for a long time," Lewand said. "The reason to explore a contract extension with Matthew is to fulfill that goal of having him be our quarterback for a long time. It's not a short-term look at the salary cap. That's the wrong way to look at that. When you look at extending somebody like Matthew, he's not going to take less money to extend. That's a very short-term focus to look at. "The reason to have an extension with Matthew, just like the reason to have the extension with Calvin last year, was to secure their services for a long period of time."

If all these greedy owners had not locked out the players a few years ago and whined that they needed to lower the cap for years some of them would not be in this cap mess. Frrriiiggg em all. The owners got everything they wanted, now live with it....

Good thing there is no cap for the commissioners office. He was paid $30 million for that lockout new CBA deal year when he said he was only taking $1 for his services.

Yeah - sucks being him.

I guess the owners are pretty happy with his fine work...

What a bunch of bull crap. This is solely about the salary cap. In today's NFL a 3 year contract is a long-term deal. Question is, is committing $70M-$80M to Matthew Stafford a good idea?

February 16, 2013  12:28 PM ET

I don't understand some points here. Do you mean that the Lions don't really want Stafford long time? The only reason they are negotiating is to get out from under the cap?

Why don't they just give him his unconditional release, then?

February 16, 2013  12:56 PM ET

That would be a mistake, reup him on a much shorter leash. The pass rush isn't slowing down and he is injury prone and the Lion's won't spend money where they need so they need to go find a DT QB sense they clearly don't know what they're doing or what type of team they want to be or even how to go get it.

Why not, structure it so you can cut him if he doesn't perform or gets hurt. It's not like they plan on giving him the money
