08:55 AM ET 02.17 | Concerns about third baseman Pablo Sandoval's weight have become a rite of spring. Sandoval's waistline is again an issue. "I don't think that question will go away, to be quite honest," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday. Bochy acknowledged that the 2012 World Series Most Valuable Player would be well-advised to drop some pounds. "It's fair to say he has to shed a few," Bochy said of Sandoval, who's listed at 262 on the Giants' spring roster. "But he will. We have some time." Sandoval indicated that he can function at his current weight. "I feel in shape," he said. "Who cares what other people say? I'm here to do my job." Second baseman Marco Scutaro supported Sandoval. "If he's not in baseball shape, who is? He just finished playing a week ago," Scutaro said, referring to Sandoval's extensive activity in the Venezuelan Winter League.

"If he's not in baseball shape, who is?..." +1 - he looks pretty spherical to me.

OK, so his SI bio lists him at 246 lbs. This article at a reported 262 lbs. As long as he stay south of Prince Fielder territory he should be ok. Would love to see them both on the same team at the corners and see if they could break that 600lb. combined record held by the Bud Light Softball squad.

It just amazes me that a professional athlete, with millions of dollars at on the line, can't be bothered to keep himself in better condition.

The next 2 years are, but in 2 years he becomes a 28 year old free agent. He's pissing away a lot of future earnings.

wiseup: Sandaval has played well at this weight for years. He hits for power and average and a run producer. He also holds his own defensively.

It is his business if he wants to be heavy - but when he becomes a free agent teams would be wise to avoid a long term deal. Over 30 over weight athletes age real fast.

By hitting three home runs in one WS game and becoming the WS MVP? It's not an issue because the dude can flat out play. So if being a gamer and one of the top two or three third basemen in the NL is pissing away his future, there are a whole hell of a lot of teams who will pay him to do it.
Piss away, Panda. Piss away.

the only problem with weighing that much is the injury factor....and as he get's older.....and heavier it will be that much more difficult to bounce back....
