Top 2014 UT recruit still firm after Mack Brown draws line

09:36 AM ET 02.17 | When Demetrius Knox stepped on the Texas campus for the Longhorns' junior day last Sunday, there wasn't a question of whether or not he'd pull the trigger and give a commitment. That was taken care of last fall. The questions surrounding the 6-foot-5, 300-pound four-star lineman -- at No. 7, Texas' highest-rated commitment so far in the American-Statesman's 2014 Fabulous 55 list of the state's top prospects -- have to do with whether or not his commitment will stick. Knox, the state's highest-rated offensive lineman, had his meeting with Texas head coach Mack Brown, and they talked about what being committed to the Longhorns entails. Brown, reinforcing his comments from national signing day, made no bones about telling prospects that if they want to look around, then Texas would look around as well to fill that spot in the recruiting class. Knox's meeting with Brown was productive. While the details are likely to remain behind closed doors, Knox said he came out feeling good about Brown when it comes to the future of the football program. "I like him as a coach and as a father figure," Knox said. "He still has that desire to win." At this stage of the game, Knox -- the nation's 67th overall-rated recruit for 2014 by 247Sports -- knows the ramifications if he wants to take additional visits. That said, Knox considers himself a solid verbal commitment to the Longhorns. "The future of Texas looks bright," Knox said. "I'm proud that I'll be in it."

The game seems to have passed Mack brown by. I hope not but he really needs to start winning again!

We'll see how committed he is after his senior year. A lot can happen between now and then. After June he can start getting unlimited texts, note cards, posters, and phone calls from any coach, assistant, or athletic department staffer.

Especially this year, when Emmert's new rules go into effect. Kids are going to get barraged with texts & phone calls. Of course the cheaters were already doing this before the rule changes (burner phones), but now everyone in the athletic department at every school will be doing it.

Maybe some Mexican take out didn't agree with him or he is thinking about his sparking defense that got lit up for an average of 50+ points in a 3 game stretch of WV, Zero U, and Baylor.

Texas has done a good job of keeping the recruits in state when they wanted them. Seems a bit harsh over one guy leaving late.

Not true. When he was drooling and moaning about Texas' right to be in the Rose Bowl several years ago, he had a goofy look on his face.

How did Texas fall so far so fast? They were perennial national title contenders annually through 2009, and it's been in the basement ever since. What could have changed to cause that? Hell the Big-12 has lost teams that would have put them 2 notches even lower than they ended up being the past couple years. Mack has always sucked, but still managed to be at the top of the Big-12 (little-0), so Mack sucking is not an excuse.

another average year in Austin and this verbal commitment evaporates in thin air.

RSJ was sent packing when he brought in his AAU coach. His offer was pulled before he visited any others.
Hicks saw how Harsin used DJ and Daja, the 2 guys that Harsin promised 10-12 touches a game.
Hall was never a solid commit, he was all over the place. He committed/decommitted to several teams.
Smythe and AShawn are the only real guys that were hard targets that were expected to sign. Smythe was always a wildcard, my friends always said Stanford or ND would be his landing spot. Its really all about losing AR the last week.

That's one way to look at it but I don't think it's that simple. The policy kept TX from seriously pursuing players at several positions of need once some slots were filled. Not seriously pursuing Billings until it was too late to start the process is one example. To come away with no DLs or RBs and the hope that a TE develops reflects a flawed policy no matter how many we took from the year before.
BTW I think Billings was the better DL recruit. Putting all our DL eggs into one basket on a player (A' Shawn) who didn't make 1st team all-district is really the core of the problem.

Yeah, friends that watched A'Shawn told me be glad he got away. Said he took at least 50% of plays off. Not having a backup plan for him was not real bright. I think with so few scholly's to give, they were overly cautious on extending offers. The TE they got I think will be better than Smythe in '14 and maybe '15. Not the big upside, but consistent and already developed.
I think the main issue to the new rule is just announcing what virtually everyone else does - not promise you will be the only player at that position recruited. With 23-25 scholly's available next year, don't think it will be a problem.
