10:48 AM ET 02.17 | Since Fred Wilpon just announced to the world he's debt-free and ready to spend, well ... here's a free agent for the taking who could help immediately: The door remains "slightly ajar" for free agent Jose Valverde to join the Mets as their closer, an industry source told The Post. As with the Mets' pursuit of Michael Bourn, you bet against this actually happening. But this is considerably less complicated than the Bourn endeavor. The Mets intend to start their Grapefruit League season (the opener is Saturday) with their current bullpen construction -- Bobby Parnell as closer, Brandon Lyon and Josh Edgin as the primary setup guys and the lower-leverage spots open, with Frank Francisco off the radar as he recovers from offseason right elbow surgery. Team officials will assess the pitchers' performances in games while continuing to collect information on Valverde.

I guess a closer who can't close wouldn't be that much of a liability on a team that can't win, but I still don't see the point.

The Mets already bave plenty of guys who can't close out games....forget about this guy unless you can get him dirt cheap...otherwise its time for Bobby Parnell to step up and claim this job.....

Why do people still act like average closers are some kind of valuable commodity?

Instead of worrying about a closer they need to get some extra help for the guys who will need it, the middle innings pitchers.
