Irving will be better than CP3 ... soon

08:06 AM ET 02.18 | Chris Paul or Kyrie Irving? [All] weekend, [Irving] gave some life to the idea percolating around the league that he has the talent and ceiling to be better even than CP3 -- and sooner rather than later. "It's not if Kyrie will be better," an Eastern Conference general manager told me. "It's when." It's a bold prediction, but it's not an unreasonable one. Irving is not yet 21 years old, yet on this All-Star weekend he scored 32 points in the Rising Stars Challenge, won the 3-point contest and managed to step onto the floor with the big boys Sunday night and score 15 points. The stat sheet does not do justice to just how much he fit in on a floor with the game's greatest stars.

No way he'll be the assist man that Paul but sure he'll be a better scorer. Kyrie will have to keep it up for some years to be better than Paul.

I would not take Irving over Paul. Irving is a crappy defender.

Perfectly stated. Kyrie just has a long way to go in learning how to make his teammates better. Granted he plays with some pretty terrible guys, but no matter the situation, you have to make the other guys better.
Also, CP3 went to WORK on Kyrie in the fourth quarter last night.

Because he went to Duke means nothing. Coach K and the coach before him have produced ZERO Hall of Famers for that school. The closest they ever came to that was Grant Hill. Hopefully Kyrie doesn't turn into him with all the injuries.

Irving is almost equivalent to CP3 in handles and shooting but defensively he is not even close to CP3. Irving's passing well he can pass but is almost forced to be a scoring PG with the talent they have in Cleveland. They ranked defenders in the NBA and I believe Kyrie was ranked the worse.

I will say this offensively Kyrie's game has almost no holes. He is clutch, can get off almost any shot and his handle makes him almost impossible to guard. He can finish we either hand with ease in the paint. Once he becomes good if ever defensively and be a leader then he will be on CP3's level. Right now he is a step below CP3 and that is a huge compliment for a second year PG

Last year, Kyrie had poor rankings -- what I've seen this year is quite a bit better. (e.g., % steals, pick & roll, ...) Reasons were just more experience for him -- and better defensive players around him. (mostly Jameson being gone)
But he still has a ways to go to be call a good defender.

Battier screwed it up last year. Up to that point, no Duke player had been starter for an NBA Champion.

Uhh, Yeah he is known for his defense as well at least to me. He actually leads the league in steals. I know steals isn't the only way to define defense but he is known for that too. He was all first team defense last year and 2nd team the year before that. This is from a PG that is probably 5-9 or 5-10 give or take. I am not saying he is Gary Payton or Avery Bradley but he is one the better defenders. He has lead the league in steals multiple times dating back to his second year in the league.
