Michigan not tough enough for 'big boy basketball'

08:17 AM ET 02.18 | Bright sides and silver linings have been replaced by a reality check from John Beilein. His team needed to get tougher, and enough was enough. Michigan wasn't perfect Sunday in a 79-71 win over Penn State, but the Wolverines now realize where they stand -- and know where to go from here. "This is big boy basketball," Beilein said Sunday. "You're going to get hit, you're going to get shoved, people are going to wall you up and you still have to play through it. When you lose a game the way we did at Michigan State and we've got guys with one foul, there's more in you." ... "Toughness, that's the biggest area in growth that we (need)," said Michigan point guard Trey Burke, who finished with a game-high 29 points.

Gee, ypu mean that BigBlue didn't realize until the Michigan State game that it was in a tough sport and playing in what many consider the toughest conference in that sport?

And now, perhaps, it is a little late to wake up to this fact.

Even Penn State pushed around Michigan.

Can't see them even sniffing the Final 4.

They may be out in the 2nd round.

Illinois is playing well and will probably beat Michigan next Sunday in Ann Arbor.

Is he advocating fouling the opponent?

"Fouling" is a relative term / referees interpretation.

Have you watched a B1G basketball game?

There is a lot of contact.

vs MSU . . . MSU = MEN and Michigan = little boys.

It was a game in which Michigan wilted from the pressure defense, contact and resulting intimidation.

They need to grow up big time if they expect to make a run in either the B1G or NCAA tourneys.

Well said. Grow a pair if you want to compete big time.

And just so you know . . . . I am a Michigan fan. Reality hit big time that game.

I don't know. It sounds a lot like the football coach that wants someone to go out and "hurt" someone....

Definitely not Beilein's style.

Beilein knows that playing hard will result in some fouls. No coach complains about those kind of fouls. He is getting his team ready for the rematch in Ann Arbor, letting them know it's okay to take a foul fighting for your spot on the floor. No way is suggesting deliberate fouls.

February 18, 2013  06:15 PM ET

It was one game. MSU/Michigan is a huge rivalry. MSU feels it owns basketball and "defended" their home turf admirably. More important, is how will Michigan responds in the rematch. Izzo ALWAYS has his team ready come March. Road wins in the B1G are hard to come by and Illinois probably needs one against Iowa, OSU or Michigan to get to the dance (short of winning the B1G tournament).

No, what Beilein was referring to is that at the end of the MSU game, Michigan had 4 fouls to "give" before MSU would get free throws. It's a tactic to break a team's offensive rhythm and eat time off the clock. The Michigan players didn't get the message, and lost because of that.

In regards to AutinLion, they could of used up all the fouls and it wouldn't have mattered. It was like boys vs men out there. MSU had the practice squad out there and they were still scoring.

Have any of you been watching college ball this year? There has been a new "darling" of college b-ball just about every week - including every one of the current top 10 teams. Now the media has attached itself to Miami. And just about every team has had at least one game that left everyone scratching their heads. Michigan has not been the same same since Jordan Morgan went down 3 weeks ago. My prediction is that Morgan is back full strength in time for the Illinois game, and Michigan wins out, including against MSU and IU in Ann Arbor. Then M will once again be the darlings of college b-ball with a #1 seed prediction.

And let's see how tough the Spartans are against the Suckeyes in Columbus. MSU loses this week-end in Columbus, and comes to Ann Arbor and lays another egg. That's 3 losses in a row, and suddenly nobody is talking about Sparty cutting down the nets in the NCAA championship.

February 24, 2013  10:33 AM ET

Aww c'mon, look at the schedule. Every good team in the B10 that Michigan played was on the road. Now, all the good teams are coming to Ann Arbor. Let's see how the home record is against the good Big Ten teams.

I say we play the game 1st on Sunday ... then jaw jack ... (although Wolverine fans seem to think JJ is a Varsity sport)
