Why Barkley won't throw at the combine

08:37 AM ET 02.18 | So much for "the biggest test" of his young life. The separated shoulder USC quarterback Matt Barkley suffered last season will prevent him from throwing at this week's scouting combine in Indianapolis, according to league sources. Barkley still might decide to run and jump for NFL teams, but he will not throw, sources said. Teams wanted to watch Barkley throw to help determine whether he would be the top quarterback selected in April's draft. They -- and the pecking order for quarterbacks in this draft -- now will have to wait. If his decision confuses some, it shouldn't. When Barkley described the combine as a milestone moment in his career, he actually meant having the doctors clear him on his physicals.

With guys opting to show up at the Combine but not do their thing, is it becoming just more reality TV for the NFL Network? Y'know, something for them to run in Prime Time and then rerun ad infinitum until the Draft?
I hope we get to see a bunch of great big guys struggling with their Wonderlics, sitting on under sized wooden chair in a middle-school cafeteria somewhere. What else do they have to show if QBs won't pass, runners won't run and receivers won't catch? Can we get Kate Upton to come out and strut? Even just do stretches?

The combine started in 1982 and by 1985 all teams participated. It has done more harm than good IMO. It is for workout warriors and helps only those guys you had no intention of drafting that early, if at all.
Just watch the film. Jeesh!

If NFL teams didn't have the opportunity to measure player's arm length, hand size and calf diameter, how would they know who to draft?

I think it's ridiculous to expect a QB to throw during the combine.

True.
I always thought it was the QBs who were locks to go #1 overall that skipped the combine drills.

If that is sarcasm , then have blockers block and defensive guys try to tackle runners and the like. If you mean it, then I agree. The combine should be eliminated. Period. shuttles and 225 lb. bench presses? Really. There are workout days if you want them. And the wonderlick test? come on. The combine is where guys go to raise their chances because their stats and game film are not all that.

I do believe they should have official height and weight "weigh-ins". Because it's not uncommon for a guy to show up notably smaller than listed.
But otherwise I agree.

Hmm, not sure. What happened the last time the Jests drafted a QB out of USC?
Oh wait...

It probably did help some players from smaller schools back in the 80's, but everyone playing division 2 ball in college has a highlight reel now going into the draft. The combine's major purpose is to provide a "must see" event during the off season.

This makes good sense for the Jets.

Any team that takes a QB in the first round of this draft is really reaching, placing need over value.

I agree that most of what you need to know can be garnered from the film, but I imagine that just from a logistical standpoint, the GMs and scouts may appreciate the opportunity to have all of these athletes in the same place.
They can get a first-hand impression of their character and their drive, and any comparisons between athletes can be made immediately, and not skewed by faded memories of meetings from weeks or months prior.
