11:20 AM ET 02.18 | The two-week window for NFL teams to franchise tag one of their 2013 free agents opened on Monday and news immediately surfaced that the New England Patriots were not expected to use the tag on wide receiver Wes Welker. Now a source with "intimate knowledge of the team's thinking" says that Welker would not be slapped with the franchise tag. Instead, the Patriots will let their receiver hit the open market.

I agree with the Pats. Sure he catches 100 + balls a season but he has been in the top five dropped balls for awhile now and it happens to be in crucial moments like in the post season.

Over-Rated.

The Patriots have not won a SB since Welker has been on the team. He might be bad Karma.

The purpose of the franchise tag was so that when a team and a player and his agent were getting close to agreeing on a contract they could put it off for a year or 2 using the franchise tag. I doubt the 49ers will franchise Dashon Goldson. The 2 sides have not been able to come to an agreement in 2- 3 years, his negotiation problems started during the last year of his rookie contract 2010- 2011.

There are way to many athletes that over value their own importance. As a fan, the thing that scares me the most, is giving an athlete a big contract with guaranteed money over time and having that player start underachieving and dividing the team with petty little disputes about his underachieving.

It might be that New England had terrible defenses during those years.

The solution is to only hand out 1 year contracts.
