01:59 PM ET 02.18 | On Monday, teams in the NFL can begin assigning the franchise tag to potential free agents, therefore restricting the player from hitting the open market -- albeit at a hefty one-year price. Though he has been instrumental in New England's success since arriving in Foxboro in 2007, the Patriots will reportedly not use the franchise tag on Wes Welker this year and instead will let the slot receiver test the free agent market.

If he drops his price as much as he dropped balls, BB may keep him

I think he'll wear another uniform next year. He's a tough SOB and he will be missed. But "bad" pass? nahhh. The pass against the Giants wasn't a perfect pass but it still hit him in his hands and he didn't catch it. Just like a particular pass that he didn't catch in the AFC CG against the Ravens. Call them "drops" or call them "non catches". You take the good with the bad. And there was way more good. Including the insane TD catch he made against the Texans in the playoffs. 100+ catches/per season. He will be missed.

Meh...this isn't Jerry Rice they're losing. They could have gone nine years without a Super Bowl just as easily without him. They'll be just fine.
Now their quarterback, closer to 40 than 30 and with a sudden case of the yips and pass deflections...THAT should worry them.

No way they are franchising Wes at that price; but he may be back if he finds the market for his talents is not what his agent told him. BB and Tom would like him back, but at BB's price.
Tom is aging and his weight on the franchise decisions is declining in inverse proportion to his age.
