05:25 PM ET 02.18 | A 10-time NBA champion and member of the basketball Hall of Fame, Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss died at the age of 80 on Monday after losing a battle against an unnamed form of cancer, according to the Los Angeles Times. Buss bought the Lakers, the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, the Forum and a ranch in 1979 and in his wake left one of the most successful NBA franchises to his children. Jim Buss and Jeanie Buss have taken over most of the recent decision-making processes for the Lakers in the past few years as their father's health kept him from running the team. "Jerry Buss helped set the league on the course it is on today," NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement. "Remember, he showed us it was about 'Showtime,' the notion that an arena can become the focal point for not just basketball, but entertainment. He made it the place to see and be seen."

Few owners "matter"... but he absolutely did.

A sad day for Laker fans... and sports fans also.

It is a very sad day for the Lakers family. Jerry Buss was the best owner in all of professional sports. Thanks for 30 plus years of providing Los Angeles and their fans many. many memories. You will truly be missed.

Not to belittle Dr.Buss' death - but it's symbolic that his death may coincide with the "death" of the Lakers' long-standing success. If the Lakers don't make it to the Playoffs - AND Howard leaves this Summer - the Lakers are going down. It will truly be the "death" of the Lakers' charm and uncanny ability to stay in contention year after year and almost never missing the Playoffs in 30 years. (I believe they missed the Playoffs only once in 1994 or something.)

Such a callous statement has no place here in this forum. Try to stay classy.

Totally classless. I am not a Laker's fan, but even I do not wish bad things on them. My prayers are with the Buss family and the Lakers fans (an extension of the Buss family) during this trying time. God's speed.
