How long can Wainwright, Cards remain on good terms?

08:11 AM ET 02.19 | One season from possibly hitting the open market, Adam Wainwright is about to enter the Albert Pujols zone. Make no mistake, the Cardinals and their ace are engaging in big-boy poker. Each party possesses massive leverage, enough to walk away from the table knowing life beyond this season will remain prosperous and productive. If the Cardinals are bigger than Pujols, they are also bigger than Wainwright. Wainwright likewise has enough career remaining that he wouldn't be defined solely by his eight seasons here. ... Asked Sunday if Wainwright's talks had assumed an edge similar to Pujols' in 2011, one party familiar with the process stated flatly, "Not even close. And I'd bet anything it won't."

The Cards will offer 50 no more than a three year deal, if he is looking for Greinke numbers he is in the wrong place. 50 is in a disadvantage in coming off Tommy John in 11, a so-so 12 season, and the Cards have some plenty young pitchers ready to move into the rotation.

Agree to a point, but I also don't think the Cards want to go into 2014 with nothing but the young arms. With Carp out of the picture and Westbrook likely out of the picture after this year, Adam is the only veteran presence in that rotation. Lynn, Rosenthal, Miller and Kelly all look good, but there is little to no experience there.

The owners do this to themselves. Wainwright just has to sit back and watch them vie for the idiot of the year award. Lets see now, Greinke, $160 million and ....and....

wiseup: The Cardsrefuse to be held hostage by any player or pitcher. They make a fair offer and then tell you to take it or leave it. See Albert Pulhos or Kyle Losh(who is still unemployed). They have a stable of good young pitching with Jaime Garcia the lone vteran on staff if Wainwright walks. if necessary the Cards will either trade for a veteran starter or sign oneon free agent market.

The Cardinals do want to sign Wainwright, but there will be no Greinke or Hernandez money paid by the Cardinals. Long term pitching contracts rarely work out for the team.

I think he'll have a nice bounce back year then he'll leave because there's always some owner willing to sign them to a big long term contract. I hate to see it, but that's the way I see it working out.

I believe the negotiations are much less tense than the Pujols negotiations. I think Pujols had been planning his exit for a long time. He'd been lining up reason after reason it would be the Cardinals fault that he would leave. The Cardinals played a really good game in solving all those reasons for him and yet he still refused to admit that he left for the top dollar. It had to be the Cardinals fault that he left for the top dollar.

Agree, they are not going to give a Felix type deal to Adam. I think the best thing going for the Cardinals is that Wainwright, I believe, really would prefer to stay in St. Louis. Doesn't mean he will, but I don't see him looking to build a plan to leave the way Albert did.

My gut tells me you are correct and Adam will be somewhere else next year. My heart hopes they work something out and keep him.
