Schedule guarantees Tennessee struggles

08:15 AM ET 02.19 | Life in the SEC is tough enough, but Butch Jones has no favors in his schedule. The Volunteers have a difficult SEC slate, but things get tough even before those contests. On September 14, the Vols visit Oregon, which will continue to boast a high-powered offense despite the departure of Chip Kelly to the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. And no one should overlook the Vols' Week 2 opponent: Western Kentucky, which is led by former SEC head coach Bobby Petrino. Then, it's onto the league schedule, which is brutal from the get-go. Tennessee's first four league dates are at Florida, back-to-back home games against Georgia and South Carolina and then a road test in Tuscaloosa against two-time defending BCS national champ Alabama. Brutal.

Yeah, well first-year Arky coach has road games at Rutgers, Florida, LUS, and Alabama next year. Add home games against Texas A & M and S. Carolina.........no cake walk for this new coach either.

No sympathy for the down-trodden.....but I beg of you, please do not lose to Western Kentucky!

Western Kentucky is a quality club.

Not knocking them.....just not ready to think about BP winning an SEC game yet

But wait the "experts" on these boards tell me that the SEC is really a weak conference. How could it be that tough for TN? I am so confused. Can one of you "experts" please explain how this could be?

It's not the in-conference SEC games...it's that road trip to Oregon that makes the Vols schedule so tough!

UTk must have missed the memo about "only home games against other BCS conference opponents".

...and, in addition to WKU, they do get Austin Peay and South Alabama at home so they pass the SEC OOC scheduling course. So 3 of 4 OOC games at home. They still pass the SEC test.

Now, get out of debt.

Meant to quote Joe's comment. Sorry

LMFAO, who in the hell "Ever said that the SEC is a weak conference"??? Dude stop putting words in football fans mouth!!! I think what some fans are saying, is that the bottom half of the SEC is average at best!!! With a little luck the Vols can win six games this year, Austin Peay, Western Kentucky, South Alabam, Missouri, Auburn and Kentucky!!! Maybe, just maybe they can beat Vandy for the seventh win!!! :-)

Come on Patchy you know this is a SEC fluff piece with all right cliches'. "Brutal SEC schedule" blah blah blah. We'll see the same boiler plate in a couple of days when Missouri or SCar needs some fluffing. Making Western Kentucky out to be tough gave me a laugh!

February 19, 2013  11:08 AM ET

Really, Western Kentucky? If they go 0-2 (yes they are losing big to Oregon), just cancel the season.

Vandy will go two wins in a row.....(even at Rocky Top)......

Could very well be that Vandy beats thre Vols this year. So maybe a 6-6 record for Tennessee's football team this year and a lower tier bowl game??

SEC, this is the schedule that Alabama should have had for the past 5 years. Make then earn their way to the SEC Championship. But instead BAMA gets Kentucky rather than South Carolina and Tennessee rather than Georgia.
Hope the SEC finally wakes up when the new scheduling comes about and realizes the error of their ways.
Yes, Alabama you have a good team and a great coach but your schedule has been an easy one for the past 5 years or so.

February 19, 2013  12:05 PM ET

The SEC must have something against Tennessee and Arkansas to give them those schedules.
I believe the SEC wanted to be certain that they had at least one team in the Championship game so they gave easy schedules to Alabama and Georgia.
SEC, lets get back to where ALL the teams including Georgia and Alabama have to earn their way to the SEC Championship.

Another Vols thread is trashed by the usual snarky crowd with the same old bitter bile. You're like babies pleased with the warmth of your recently filled diapers. Well, poop cools down, then, snuggling in your own poop ain't so much fun, is it?

I miss JRM. I miss the times when at least a cluster of a dozen or so comments were on topic and concerning CFB.

February 19, 2013  01:56 PM ET

That little girl in orange in the pic atop this thread is a more "true" CFB fan than any Domer or Trog fan haunting these threads, today.
