Avs O'Reilly on Sens radar

08:19 AM ET 02.19 | With Jason Spezza on the shelf through at least the beginning of the playoffs, Ottawa could use some production up the middle. The Senators have studied the possibility of acquiring Ryan O'Reilly, but not at any cost. Sources say Senators GM Bryan Murray has held talks with Colorado Avalanche GM Greg Sherman about a deal for the restricted free agent centre, however, the indications are the asking price is significantly high. The 22-year-old O'Reilly, the last restricted free agent who remains unsigned, is demanding more than $3.5 million than Matt Duchene is making with the Avs. It should be noted O'Reilly made $900,000 last year on an entry-level deal. O'Reilly 18 goals and 37 assists for 55 points in 81 games last season.

Delusions of grandeur maybe?
$3.5 Million for that rate of return is not right. Plain and simple.

That oughtta mean the end of Alfie. Your team isn't making the playoffs, and you might be able to snag a first for your captain. Suck it up and look to the future. Murray and The Stash aren't losing their jobs because their two best players both suffered season-ending injuries.

I look at it from a Bourque-ish POV. They could get a good return. No shortage of teams that could definitely use him. And, most of all, wouldn't he want to win a Cup before it's all over? Does he really think if he sticks around for another season it'll happen in Ottawa? If they fall into lottery territory, I think they have no choice.

Too bad BB isn't a GM right now. He'd give up to first rounders for O'Reilly.

It's a good point. It would be hard to think of them trading Alfie, but it makes some sense. It's the balance of sentimentality versus business logic.

A big 22 yr old centre that put up 55 points last year is gonna make at least quadruple what OReilly made last year. How can the Avs have this piece that at least 14 other Teams need , and just trade it away ??
