08:14 AM ET 02.19 | On the upside, as Fredi Gonzalez noted, Atlanta may not hit into as many double plays in 2013. Braves hitters struck out a franchise-record 1,289 times in 2012, and [Gonzalez] knows they could whiff even more after adding outfielders B.J. and Justin Upton, who had 301 strikeouts between them last season, and third baseman Chris Johnson, who had 132. ... Justin Upton has five consecutive seasons with more than 120 strikeouts, including 152 in 2010 for the whiff-king Diamondbacks, who set a major league record with 1,529 strikeouts. That was the only team to ever have five players with at least 130 strikeouts, including ex-Braves Adam LaRoche and Kelly Johnson. No other team has even had five players with 120 strikeouts, but this Braves team could.

BJ Upton will be good for 160.

Used to matter, doesn't anymore, and the players know it.

A-Rod would be a good fit for this team. IJS.

as long the players get their money who cares how many times get blow away??

then again,,,,the braves would need to use a disciplined hitting coach, that's IF they really are up to fix this problem,,,,,

February 19, 2013  12:04 PM ET

been patient and disciplined at the plate it won't hurt at all,,,

February 19, 2013  12:05 PM ET

the braves with a wrecked hitting coach would likely set records in strikeouts,,,,

The speed/power/defense combo is exciting but there will be a price to pay.

Hopefully you draft them all.

wiseup: I have said it before. the Uptons are overated. Atlanta may regret having both of them on payroll. Uptons may surprise the Braves and have a bust of a season. Atlanta has their hopes that the Uptons can carry team. Time will tell.

BJ Upton will have the worst season of his career.. And Justin Upton will have below career average numbers. Atlanta made a huge gamble in acquiring them both. It's not a coincidence that BJ Upton had a career year last year with his contract being up. He's an average player in the MLB but the Braves are paying him as if he's above average. And as for Justin, he's a young player who's already on his decline. Great defense won't make up for their struggles at the plate.

People have been comparing the Upton's to The Great Ricky Henderson Ricky in 25 Years Walked 2190 times Struck out 1694 Times Never struck out 120 times in any season and 2129 Unintential Walks and Scored 2295 Runs, both Upton's won't do that!!!

I for one HATE all the strikeouts in the league.

Do you guys realize that over 100 players struckout more than 100 times last season.

The leader of K's has been over 200 for the past 4 or 5 seasons.

It is absolutely repulsive. How can I or any other little league coach teach batting fundamentals and make them stick when kids watch as their favorite "superstar / all-star" swings for the fences every at bat and K's more than contacts?
