Female kicker attempting to break sexist gender barrier

06:07 PM ET 02.20 | Lauren Silberman will make history on March 2 when she becomes the first female to ever participate in a regional NFL Draft Combine. Silberman said she wasn't aware that she was the first female to ever apply and try out at an NFL combine but she's more than thrilled to be doing so. Unfortunately, even if she ends up being the best kicking prospect since Sebastian Janikowski, an NFL team is not going to pick her and it's a crying shame. Distraction, sideshow and publicity stunts are likely all descriptions that will be used to describe a team that drafts or even signs Silberman if she impresses at the combine. The prospect of a female playing in the NFL is something that excites a lot of people since the gender barrier is something that has yet to be broken. For years the defense has been that keeping women off the gridiron is "for their own good," which is a ridiculously sexist thing to even think. Women are not timid, fragile creatures -- have you ever watched an episode of Mob Wives or any of those Real Housewives shows? She might not make a team and she might not even make it to the super-regionals, but we have a woman trying out for the NFL next month and the only laughable thing about it is that it took until 2013.

Are you kidding me--- if she makes it as a kicker more power to her- but to say a woman can play any position in the nfl is a pipe dream. This goes right up there w women on the front lines in combat situations. I could see it in nba, NHL heck maybe even baseball but not the nfl- unless it is a kicker.

Oh- mad its a sexist barrier. Who wrote this trash.

I'd take her anytime and anyday over Cundiff!

Nothing more than a "prop". It's all fun and games until the snap "mistakenly" misfires and she get PLOWED!

But I'll tell ya, when I saw all the skinny guys in that squashed picture, I thought this was another basketball thread.

Looks like the one in the middle is about to do a 360 with a half twist.

What a fun existence she would have in her own locker room (closet)

The Question is Can She Cook?

February 21, 2013  08:39 AM ET

Can't we have just one sport where woman (no offense intended) aren't allowed to join in? I mean really, just one?

It's not a sport, exactly, but Enjoyment of the Three Stooges meets the other criteria.

if she's a BIG girl, and can field-tackle too = DRAFT HER !

Given some of the feeble tackling attempts I've seen by kickers in the NFL, she doesn't have to be a great tackler to be a place kicker. Now a punter is a different story.

Jets will draft her and she can room with Tebow...she'll make a better pro than him plus the Jets can add to the circus they call a football team.

How can they say she's first. I believe the California Bulls had a female kicker, and she was hot. She just quit before she got involved with O.J.

I read elsewhere she played soccer on a club team in college and has little kicking experience. Her father said she once kicked a 40 yard FG. This is really a non-story: it's simply a young woman who ponied up the dough to go to a regional combine.
