06:10 PM ET 02.20 | After a tumultuous 6-10-1 start to their season, the Buffalo Sabres have fired head coach Lindy Ruff. The move comes as a bit of surprise but a justifiable one as the Sabres have been in the dumps as of late and it appears as though the team was starting to become divided with goalie Ryan Miller stating yesterday that he believes the team is playing at a level that deserves to be booed by the fans who pay to see them. Before his firing today, Ruff was the second-longest tenured head coach in North American professional sports, with only San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has been in his current job longer than Ruff had been. The last time the Sabres had a head coach other than Ruff was back in 1996. Ruff was hired in 1997 and has held the position until today. Two years after being hired by the Sabres, Ruff led the team to the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals and had a career record of 562-452-84 along with 78 ties.

Truly, a 1-dmiensional offence, and the only real defense is the goaltender, who is pitching a fit after every game because of a lack of motivation he sees in front of him, night in, night out.

Let the sell off commence!

maybe they shouldn't have given such a fat contract to a kid that is turning out to be defense's answer to Jim Carey

(Caniac, I know you're new-ish to hockey...Jim Carey was a goalie for the Washington Capitals who managed to win best goalie honours (vezina trophy) in 1996, then promptly fell apart and found himself out of the NHL by the end of the following season)

Actually, I was watching Whalers games (primarily, along with a great many other games as I could find) back in Oz from the early 80's, I appreciate the knowledge though, and I agree, whole-heartedly, it's nonsensical, and now he pays the ultimate price coaching-wise...

Not that I liked Ruff in the first place though...

and not that i think Lindy Ruff will ever be compared to Scotty Bowman, but Regier has to take just as much blame here, and should be joining Lindy on the unemployment line.
I always found it ridiculous that the guy that gets the pieces that don't always fit (for whatever reason) can then fire the guy that he gives those pieces to.

Yep. He was one of the few coaches in the NHL who could still make Chicken Kiev with chicken ****. He must've lost the recipe recently.
