05:53 AM ET 02.21 | Now publicly, the push is twofold. Don't misunderstand the Dallas Cowboys' position on wanting to give Tony Romo a contract extension. It's not only being discussed because the Cowboys will gain valuable and much-needed salary cap space. Stephen Jones, the team's executive vice president, said Wednesday that the franchise would like to give Romo an extension to "reward" someone they consider to be a "great quarterback." "I think on this particular situation with Tony is we think we have a great quarterback and we want him to be our quarterback here for the next 4-5 years," Jones told 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. "We're fortunate that we have a really good quarterback, if not a great one. He deserves to be paid. He's in the last year of his contract."

I think the Cowboys should really let him test free agency and find out his market value out there and offer him just a little more if they decide they want to keep him instead of offering him a contract plus incentives right away.

Reward him for what? Never winning anything and for wetting the bed every time he gets into a big game situation? If every team "rewarded" their players for doing that, the salary cap would have to be about $600 million dollars per team.

If Romo is a "great" quarterback then there are another 15 "great' ones in the NFL right now and about 8 "really great" quarterbacks as well.
