06:02 AM ET 02.21 | As moral victories go, a 22-win improvement over two seasons and the most wins in 20 years isn't bad -- but moral victories aren't quite what will be expected of Clint Hurdle after his contract extension. [Owner Bob Nutting] repeated the 22-win improvement organizational mantra, and expressed support for what [Neal Huntington] and Hurdle have done. But he also made it very clear that despite the extensions, no jobs are really safe ... "The mindset is we must take a step forward," Nutting said. "We expect to win. I expect to win. Clint expects to win. Neal and [club president Frank Coonelly] have the same expectation. The idea that an extension is somehow a free pass is exactly the message I would not want to send, and not the message Clint heard."

This attitude isn't giving much respect to the most consecutive below-.500 seasons record.

No respect for tradition.

Remember back in the 70's when they were a force to be reckoned with? Guys like Clemente, Stargell, Dave Cash, Manny Sanguillen, Steve Blass, Richie Hebner? They made another run later on with guys like Andy Van Slyke, Barry Bonds, and company.

When the only guy you add is Russell Mendoza Line Martin, then you are wheel spinning. Lowest payroll in MLB and it will show.

Clint Hurdle to the Gm and owner, "Dave Parker isn't walking through that door, Willie Stargell isn't walking through that door, heck, even Kent Tekulve isn't walking through that door...we stink and it's your fault."

Then why extend Hurdle before he guides the Pirates to a winnning season? And why after the two worst 2nd half collaspes in MLB history!!!
