04:48 PM ET 02.21 | The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled defenseman Ryan Murphy from juniors, according to an announcement on the team's website on Thursday morning. The recall was done on an emergency basis and coincided with the club announcing that forward Tim Brent had been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to Feb. 14. Murphy has been playing with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League and leads the team's defense corps with eight goals and 39 points. Originally selected with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, Murphy has yet to make his NHL debut.

Some are. And, it's going to get even worse for some teams.

Good luck Murphy. Surprised the Staal/Staal duo isn't working out a little better?

The Staal Brothers are holding their end up just fine... playing from behind against Winnipeg last night made matters worse, the only time the team would wake up was when we'd get behind... with your top pair of D-men out, defensive breakdowns are a near surety, but Murphy played well last night, the one thing you don't want to hear iss your name, behind a failure in your defensive zone, and he had shown a couple of flashes of brilliance along the way... He won't be going back to Juniors any time soon anyways, because of Gleason's Injury.

Thanks for the update, as I don't keep up with the Canes that closely.
I hope the best for Jordan Staal, as this Pens' fan will always hold him in high regard.

How's Brandon Sutter doing by the way? He was a fan fave down here.
As for Jordan, I had a grudging respect for him when he was with the Penguins, and now, it's just plain respect. I can honestly say there isn't a Staal Brother I dislike (even Marc, even though he plays for that decrepit bunch in New york)

If you asked me today, no way was it an even swap (Sutter vs. Staal), but ask me in another year.... I like Sutter though. I know he might have been a little perturbed when traded, but hopefully he ends up enjoying it here, and playing on the Pens.
J. Staal's size, work ethic, reach, PK abilities, positive attitude on and off the ice, etc., etc.? No doubt, you will really like him. And I am glad he is where he wants to be.

On half the Teams in the league J Staal would be the main man. Pitt is just to loaded.......now if they could just get some goaltending to back up that talent.

I think talent wise the two are pretty similar, but I think Gronk has a much better work ethic.

I am still not selling out Fleury. I think he still has one or two stellar seasons, or even Cup-winning season in him.
I am beginning to think that is part of their problem, as if that could be a problem = too much talent.
"Too much talent," while they let go some (didn't say all) their heart and grit.
But other teams have far worse problems.

Minus Paul Martin; that guy alone makes the point of contraction valid. Also tell Orpik if you want to run around like a loose cannon; at least play the part when guys take a run at your best D-Man, LeTang.

Orpik is my favorite Pen, so watch it there homeslice. JK!
That being said, I think Orpik has had a bad 1/2 season or two, but that was because of injuries. Otherwise, he has been the most consistent player, who is upfront, and plays with a ton of heart, and has not known to be a dirty player (Cole incident happened YEARS AGO), so not sure what "loose cannon" comment could be about. I have never known him not to stick up for teammates (see one of Sabres getting in Fleury's face the other day), and I am not sure which incident you are referring to exactly, but perhaps he wasn't on the ice at the moment (he plays mostly with Martin now, not Letang), or perhaps they had already been in the box 10 times that game, and he figured to choose another day to pick his battle.
But...that Martin and Orpik were God-Awful during the Flyers' game. God-awful!
