NFL to keep closer watch on field conditions

07:43 AM ET 02.22 | The NFL will take a more proactive approach to ensuring that teams' playing fields are in acceptable condition in the aftermath of the January playoff game at FedEx Field in which the state of the playing surface was sharply criticized, a top league official said Thursday. "I think that instance certainly highlighted the need for us to re-engage and be much more involved in enforcing our current rules and policies," Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, said at the league's scouting combine in Indianapolis. Anderson said the league has left the condition of playing fields "primarily to the clubs over the years." Teams must certify that the fields in their home stadiums comply with NFL standards. But Anderson said the league now will be more vigilant in monitoring the state of playing surfaces around the NFL, particularly late in the season in stadiums -- like FedEx Field -- with natural grass fields. Many of the fields league-wide, Anderson said, also are used for college games and other events.

You mean they weren't watching closely before?

Yes, particularly since most NFL management types are well qualified to watch grass grow.

They can just go ahead and setup shop in Washington, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. Anywhere else I'm forgetting?

I agree they should monitor their fields better, but that's not why RGIII got hurt. It was the two pieces of spaghetti that were posing as his ligaments. His knee was shot before the game started.

If the field doesn't meet the NFL's requirements, does anyone really think they will cancel or move a game? This is all for appearances.

Yeah but I'm trying to think of the ones that are grass, and that I recall people bitching about in the last 5-10 years

Wasn't Brian Urlacher beaching about Soldiers' Field? I seem to recall him blaming the field when the Pats came to town and stomped him and the Bears on winter's day. Funny how the field didn't seem to bother The Hoodie and Company.

Will the field be anything other than hard as a rock in NY??? Snow ball fights in the stands would be more of worry....

Chicago.
Honestly I've never heard complaints about the field conditions at Fed-Ex field before RGIII's injury.
Although the fact that he shouldn't have been on the field in the first place had a lot more to do with the injury.

I can only hope.
For all the overhyped complaining... I hope the weather conditions in NJ* are as miserable as weather can get... because we'll never see another non-domed Super Bowl in the north ever again.
Might as well make it a classic
