Jets GM: Mark Sanchez will have competition at QB

08:30 AM ET 02.22 | Just in case Mark Sanchez didn't know it already, new Jets general manager John Idzik isn't going to let him get comfortable this year. Stuck with Sanchez for what most likely will be one final season, Idzik offered tepid praise for the beleaguered quarterback here yesterday while repeatedly emphasizing that Sanchez will have to battle for the starting job. "We're going to do everything to increase the competition so that he plays better," Idzik said of Sanchez during a news conference at the NFL scouting combine. And if Idzik wasn't clear enough, coach Rex Ryan added an exclamation point when asked yesterday if he could guarantee Sanchez would be the starter in 2013 after his unceremonious benching late last season. "Clearly, there's going to be competition at that position," Ryan said.

Hahahahahahahahaha. Just sayin'.

"We're going to do everything to increase the competition so that he plays better."

Yeah, well, they brought in Tebow last year for the same reason. How'd that work out?

February 22, 2013  08:49 AM ET

At this point in his career, how is competition going to magically make Sanchez play better? I don't get it...

Oh, that was last year. This year they're going to bring in Kevin Kolb. Or maybe Brady Quinn.

What a shocking revelation!

Well stated!

That picture of him holding the clipboard says it all.

Sanchez needs to be a situational player, the way they used Tebow last year. Bring him in when you need to run the Buttfumble play.

February 22, 2013  09:44 AM ET

This guy would have competition at quarterback if he played in a Pop Warner league.

February 22, 2013  09:49 AM ET

Sanchez will be fantastic all preseason and then when it counts, the complete lack of talent around him will have Jet fans calling for his head.

February 22, 2013  10:15 AM ET

Sanchez needs to be a career backup so he can keep his uni clean, act like he's disappointed he didn't play and then settle into the NY nightlife hard core. He has NO desire to be an NFL QB.

It's going to be fun to watch again this year....Sorry Sarge...

Sanchez knows he's getting paid, and that it could very well be his last season in J-E-T-S colors. I don't see much motivation for him to do better than he already has.

If it will be Sanchez's last season in NY, it would be nice if the Patriots had a Mark Sanchez appreciation day... to show thanks for all the enjoyment he's given to Pats fans the past few seasons.

February 22, 2013  10:49 AM ET

I would HOPE he would have competition, unless the Jets want to KEEP sucking.

Well, they did decide to keep Rex Ryan for at least another season...

Can't argue with that logic.

Who is currently the #2 QB?

Actually nobody, but the closest they have to a #2 is McElroy (from Alabama).

I think the term is "contract year." Look what Joe Flacco did during his.

Sanchez. He's clearly not a #1
