Jonathan Papelbon: Phillies lack leadership

08:37 AM ET 02.22 | Roy Halladay wants to finish every game he starts. His counterpart, Jonathan Papelbon, seeks to close as many Phillies games as possible. Both are stubborn pitchers who excel at their specific crafts, and neither are changing their stances any time soon. There is one thing they're both in agreement on: the Phillies must change how they approach the 2013 season Immediately. Halladay, who has more complete games than any active pitcher (66) but has yet to pitch in a World Series, is desperate for a team that plays with more urgency. Papelbon, owner of a World Series ring, pointed to the importance of leadership being in place long before the club's time in Clearwater ends. They agree that without those two aspects, the Phillies will not succeed in returning to the top of the National League East. "I think we're capable of greatness," Papelbon told The Morning Call on Wednesday. "I think we're capable of a world championship. I really, truly believe that. But the biggest key for us is that we're going to have to find our identity, and we're going to have to find our identity quick." And find some leadership issue. It's something that's been irking Papelbon for a while. "Since I've been here I haven't seen any leadership," he said.

Both Papelbon and Hallady are yammering for leadership. When asked who is going to lead, both reply: "Don't look at me"

A slap in the face of manager Charlie Manuel, but the leader on the team is simple, winning enough ball games to get you into the playoffs.

This leadership BS is so overblown. Most of the players on this team are highly paid veterans who should be leading by the way they play on the field.

Papelbon seems to do a lot of talking for somebody that pitches so little.

As a Phillies fan, those players you just named are among the least likely I'd consider to step up as leaders....
He's right. This team lacks the spark needed to start the fire under their asses that can carry them to another WFC year. Rollins is the self-proclaimed leader, but has failed to do what's in the best interest of the team for the past 3 or 4 years. They have the talent, even with thier advanced age, but they lack the collective drive.

Someone should mention to Papelbon that a leader doesn't go to the media and gripe about his own team....

Great way to get your teammates to like you by throwing them all under the bus saying nobody is a leader. Of course, Jonathan, you COULD always quit complaining that you don't have one and step up to the plate yourself!!
