Upshaw threatens NFLPA strike

The rhetoric has started in the NFL's latest labor battle, with players union boss Gene Upshaw threatening a strike as an option to combat the owners, who he expects will opt out of the collective bargaining agreement in November. As part of the last-minute deal agreed to in March 2006, either side has the right to terminate the deal in November. Upshaw listed a shutdown of the $8 billion-a-year industry as a union alternative.

what other company in this country can they complain about making more in one year than most do in a life time. I would love to own a business and have the city build me a building. the owners are supposed to make the money. you think bill gates makes all the money or his employees? there is was too much money there for these guys to shut down the industry. if you can't make money that is distributed to you equally from 8 billion dollars then go work some where else. upshaw is the nfl version of bud selig. an idiot who only cares about putting money in his pocket. they do need to look at the retired players who did not make close to what the third string qb or even a kicker makes. gumbal called it right when he called upshaw a lap dog.

Upshaw is a complete dumb @-s-s and has to be the worse union leader in pro sports . . . .correction, in the country. Whey dont' they vote this guy out? I see his point that if they go to a uncapped year, they will never go back to one, but do you even consider what will happen to the game if you strike? Actually I take that back, nothing will happen, becuase people will let businesses treat them like sh-i-t just as long as they can cheer on sunday . . . .

I hope someday the owners and players decide to put some of the profits they both make in to the retired players fund..Some of those guys need serious medical help..I do not see an advocate for them in all of it..

February 1, 2008  08:31 AM ET

I agree 50yr

Upshaw needs to remember what happened last time.

localboy54 ..What you said is very true, but I am afraid in time it will become a rich mans game anyways..Season tickets will be too much to see it live, look at the superbowl prices for a ticket..NFL network will ultimately charge hundreds of dollars to see many games because the money is in the tv deals...it will go the way of boxing, pay per view...follow the money...Enjoy it now, because in ten years it will be completely different.

February 1, 2008  08:56 AM ET

This is just his spew until him and the commissioner spend a weekend at a strip club and settle this behind doors....no biggie just some verbal **** so he doesnt look too much like a puppet.

February 1, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Has Upshaw lost is flippin mind? Why even talk trash just before the Super Bowl? Our country is on the verge of a recession with people loosing their homes, jobs, etc. Do really believe people are going to be sympathetic to "We don't make enough money?" Sounds to me like all those hits have affected your judgement abilities. This ain't exactly the time to bring up collective bargaining issues. Go back to sleep Gene! We'll wake you up when its time.

The owners should call his bluff and lock the players out. Next, hire non-union replacement players (many of whom were almost able to make the final roster cuts) and still have a season. Finally, enjoy watching over-paid players come running back to the game when they start to have their Bentleys and Benzs repoed and their houses go into foreclosure!!!! Many of these players live on a shoe-string budget....buying cars and houses for various family members...

Exactly what we want to hear, NFL players on strike.

Underpaid millionaires!

February 1, 2008  10:00 AM ET

let 'em strike -- it would be nice to go a whole year without having to read and hear about Brady and the Patriots as 'best player/team ever'

February 1, 2008  10:16 AM ET

the nfl is a juggernaut right now. a strike would not be a good idea. if the nfl needs a lesson on what not to do, just look at the other major sports. Strikes in each of those sports caused huge issues. Fans can deal with drugs, steroids, HGH and other off the field issues, but not strikes

Amen to that.

February 1, 2008  10:24 AM ET

I cannot fault the players for wanting a larger share of the income they generate, even if they make millions already. I liken pro athletes to rock stars. They are entertainers, deserving of all the income the fans are willing to provide.

...and that is just it... We the fans buy the hats and tickets because of the players and teams. We do not give our money because of our charitable feelings for the owners. We give it because we love watching "Player X" play the game. If "Troy Montana" or "Brett Marino" sell a blue million tickets and get the game on every station in the country, and generate a boatload of advertising revenue, they deserve their significant cut.

UH, oh.. The Redskins have another chance to win a Super Bowl if they strike....
