Lions meeting with Stafford about extension

03:28 PM ET 02.22 | The Detroit Lions want to make sure they'll hold on to their quarterback for a while: the team's general manager, Martin Mayhew, is meeting with Matt Stafford and his agent at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis with regards to making a new contract for the quarterback.

Stafford's deal likely won't give him a pay raise: his contract counts for $21 million against next year's salary cap, so the team will likely give him an extension in hopes of lowering the cap hit - much like they did with Calvin Johnson last year.

Mayhew said Stafford is one of nine priority players the team wants to resign out of 23 Lions up for free agency this year.

As a Packer fan I'll just say, DON'T give them any cap relief Matt! Stand by your guns! :)
