Report: 49ers want to trade Alex Smith

09:11 AM ET 02.23 | As San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh was trying to sell reporters on the idea that the 49ers could keep quarterback Alex Smith, other members of his organization were quite clear about what is going to happen to Smith as they prepared to sign players. Smith is going to get traded and probably sooner than later. As San Francisco front-office representatives met with several agents to gauge the free-agent market on Friday at the NFL scouting combine, there was a common theme to their discussions. Don't worry, we'll have plenty of money once we trade Smith. Although one source said it's far too early to guess, Kansas City appears to be the most interested team. The Chiefs are unlikely to use the No. 1 overall pick on a quarterback this year because none of the top ones -- such as Geno Smith and Matt Barkley -- appear to be worth it. Several head coaches and offensive coordinators this week said they wouldn't be surprised if no quarterback were selected in the first round this year.

Well, of course they do. Too much money to your back up QB.

Breaking news: Water is wet (at least in its liquid state).

Nor for that QB.
I'm sorry - but he's not worth THAT type of investment.

Agree. There is a reason the 49ers tried to replace him last year and did this year. He had a team with a great defense that gave him field position, a very good OL and WRs, a great TE and a very strong running game, and yet he never lit up the scoreboard. On a struggling team he will make little difference.

There are teams that could use a better QB than what they have, Bless the Cards but they are in the same division so I don't see that happening

I'd rather trade for Flynn and turn no 1 pick into 2 lower 1st rounders with all the help this team needs

I have to agree. It will pass, this has happened before. defenses adjust and when those QBs start getting hit more, that will be that.

He has the same agent as Peyton, he's got one yrear left on his deal, if he doesn't sign an extension with his new team, he becomes a free agent, by then and the end of this season who knows a team like Denver might enter the mix! If I were him I'd wait it out.

Kaep isn't a running quarterback. He just can light them up if they cheat. He's got one of the best arms in the league.

Here are the facts: The 49ers are only $1.3 million under the cap now. The highest paid player on the team for 2013 is Smith, he is a $9.75 million cap hit. Really? For a guy that they hope never sees a down in 2013 for them? Say what they want, he will be released of no one dummies up and trades much for him.

Good chance RGIII doesn't come back to what he was or for long. So there's just Russell Wilson and Kaep. If one of them go down that will be the end of it. The running QB won't have lasted as long as the Wildcat.

There have been running QB's in the NFL for 50 years that I know of. Not many of them, but enough to lead me to believe that there will always be a coach who get's all starry eyed when he has the chance to draft (or trade for) a QB who can make things happen with their legs.
As I've said a bunch of times, RGIII will be under center for Washington's first game next year and his leg will be as strong as it was at the beginning of last season. I'm not making any predictions on how long he stays healthy with his reckless style of play, but the knee won't be an issue in Sept.

Kansas City could either give up a 1st round in 2013 or 2014 or 2nd round picks in 2013 and 2014.
Cleveland can give up their 1st round in 2013 or 2014 or 2nd round picks in 2014 and 2015.
Kansas City could trade for Smith and if they wanted to move down in the draft, pick up a draft choice or 2.
