Johnny Football files trademark infringement lawsuit

08:24 AM ET 02.23 | Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel can't capitalize on his name, but he can protect it. Manziel's corporation, JMAN2 Enterprises, filed a lawsuit in Texas last week against Eric Vaughan, a man who was selling T-shirts that read, "Keep Calm and Johnny Football." Manziel claims Vaughan infringed on his trademark rights. Although Manziel didn't file papers to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for "Johnny Football" until Feb. 2, a trademark doesn't have to be federally registered for there to be an ownership claim. The lawsuit asks the court to award damages for the unlawful sale of the "Johnny Football" T-shirts. Texas A&M's compliance office recently received a ruling from the NCAA that a student-athlete can keep financial earnings as a result of a legal action.

Too much celebrity for too young a kid. I hope not, but I see trouble in "Johnny Football's" future.

The estates of Johnny Quest and Johnny Cash may want to join Manziel as part of a class-action suit. <rolls eyes>

On a more serious note, I have to wonder if JMAN2 Enterprises renders Manziel a quasi-professional who's playing "amateur" CFB.

Also, that recent NCAA ruling stating that "a student-athlete can keep financial earnings as a result of legal action" reads like a real slippery slope. I'm no lawyer, but given that window of opportunity, what's to keep a popular and nationally-known CFB player from filing "wrongful termination," "personal injury," or "negligance" lawsuits against, say, their own school?

I think the NCAA has opened a Pandora's Box here.

This is what Coach Saban calls "clutter".

Sorry to all you A&M fans who adore this guy, but everything coming from him since winning the Heisman reads Giant ****.

Nope. And a host of other non-PC words and phrases as well. When they say "keep it clean" they mean "G"-rated clean. Be careful...RoboMod is watching. Welcome to FN.

This is gonna get real ugly , who else can see this kid being carried off on a cart ( while we are subjected to 20 min of commercials). Hope the #2 quarterback is up to the forthcoming task that is awaiting him . Like Mr. T said " PAIN"

Might add that repeated and/or egregious violations will get your account banned in an instant. You'll need to be more creative in your use of clever figurative language to get your point across.

Maybe "camel toe swab" would work better.

he isn't even on campus any longer. I would be worried about his academic eligibility. Online classes or not...he's not being supervised properly if he's not even there.

Here's another idea. Suppose a booster infringes on the kid's trademark. The kid sues, wins and gets to keep the money. How is that different from the booster just handing the kid the money? Aside from the lawyers getting a cut.

Johnny knows he will never go pro, so he figures now is his time to make a buck or two.
He'll be signing nerf balls at the local home depot soon enough.
